Pratap rushed in to find Ajabdeh sitting on the NGO floor holding her hand. There was a bandage on it now, cops everywhere around and children were being questioned.
"What happened?" The panic in his voice was apparent. It was the police doctor who answered his query.
"She was hit with a cane trying to stop a man from escaping. We suggest a scan of it. If you are lucky it is not broken." He sat down on the floor beside Ajabdeh who looked in pain.
"How did all this happen?" He sat down in front of her calmly.
"I... helped bust a child trafficking racket. I was attacked. But there were cops." She reassured him.
"Yes surely, still you got yourself injured." His words came out almost like a taunt. "Why did you have to get involved?"
"Because somebody had to. They were abusing children. See them. They are barely teens." She looked up at the children. He sighed relieved.
"Let's get your scans done and get you home." He said getting up.
"No, wait." She shook her head "I am sorry I dialled you. Shakti would have told Jalal, I didn't want Rukaiya or Heer to worry."
"They have every reason to be." He checked his tone "Look at you."
"I have to stay and identify the abuser." She said "Then I will get the scans done. I need your help to shift the children to Khan Uncle's NGO. That's why I called." Pratap inhaled.
"Look, I am not leaving you here. I will stay till the scans are done and I will arrange for their transportation."
"But I have to identify the man."
"Then I will wait with you." He sat down on the floor firmly beside her.
"Oh, you shouldn't. I can manage." She insisted "Aren't you getting engaged tomorrow?"
"Great!" Pratap shook his head "The entire universe knows, except me."
"Wait what?" Ajabdeh looked confused "Shakti said you agreed."
Pratap shot her a cold stare making her look away.
"So... who is she?" Ajabdeh asked unsure "Someone you know?"
"What are you doing here Pratap?" The voice at the threshold made them look up at Tara.
"Tara what are..." Pratap looked stunned as she sobbed and hugged him. His hands automatically went away from her body, up in the air and he looked awkward "What's wrong?" Ajabdeh had got up and moved away, to the window.
"They caught my grandfather Pratap. They are saying he is a sex offender. And I aided him in child trafficking. That's not true. Yes, a few children went missing. They ran off. We run a children's home. We are innocent."
"Wait a minute...." It was Ajabdeh who spoke and Tara looked up at the girl she had barely noticed "You are Tara Singh Rathore? Veer Singh is your grandfather?" Ajabdeh looked shocked.
"You." Tara looked furious "You must be the girl giving false witness."
"Oh no, my dear, I saw him. So did the CCTV.... but how do you two..." Ajabdeh looked confused.
"Pratap, how do you know her?" Tara's tone changed "And why are you here?"
"She is your fiance?" Ajabdeh's brows shot up surprised. "Oh my God, am so sorry."
"No, she is not!" Pratap protested stepping back from Tara's reach.
"I will be tomorrow when they declare the alliance." Tara spoke "But how do you know her? She is lying."
"No she is not lying Tara, you are." Pratap put his hands in his pocket as he spoke firmly "I would believe Ajabdeh even if she didn't have proof, I know she wouldn't lie."
Ajabdeh looked up at his face and back at hers. "And I suppose we have to cancel tomorrow's party too because this alliance is off. Professionally and personally."
Tara clenched her jaws. "Ajabdeh, is it? I will remember." She walked away as Ajabdeh looked furious.
"You are not supposed to reveal witness names!" She said as soon as they were alone "What's wrong with you? She can attack me."
"Like they haven't already?" Pratap asked, staring at her injury.
"It is not funny. And I am sorry I didn't know she is your fiancee." Ajabdeh looked away.
"No, she is not. And you are sorry for saving me?" He asked, surprised " I owe you my life." She shot a glance at him as the policewomen came up to her.
"Come let's do the lineup identification then you can go home." She took Ajabdeh with her.
"I will be waiting here," Pratap said almost in a whisper of relief.
