Purnota: Chapter Three

Image
“Did you ask for me, Dadu?” Bondita asked as the old man smiled at her. She looked fresh, with her hair neatly braided and a cotton pleated skirt, Thamma sewn with a faded top of one of her cousins, as she stood before the old man sitting on the porch. “Yes indeed, Didibhai, you didn’t come for chess yesterday.” The man smiled. “Oh, Pradhan Jyatha wanted me to look out for the …” She stopped as she saw Aniruddha walking towards them down the corridor. She eyed him as the old man followed her gaze. “Oh, Aniruddha Babu, come here. This is Bondita Das.” Aniruddha smiled at the child as she looked away. “She is the only girl in the village who has appeared for her final examinations this year. She is very intelligent and…” Aniruddha nodded. “She helped me a lot yesterday.” He made her look up, with a cold stare at him as he smiled politely. “Yes, I have called her here to show you around the village. He wants to see the affected areas of the Adivasis, Bondita.” The old man made her nod. “B...

Stable Boy

“Jija, I want to go to the stables too.” Ajbante was stopped in the corridor of the inner palace by Ratan Kanwar, followed by their half-brother, Akhil, who was three. “We do.” Ratan corrected herself. The dawn had just set on the horizon, and the birds were chirping in the gardens. Ajbante Kanwar had just taken a bath in the private pool and managed to grab her empty flower basket to go to the gardens. Still, before that, she would visit the stables and cowshed, check how Lakshmi was doing with her newborn, and if Bijli was okay with the sudden changes her father had made. Ratan Kanwar’s nagging made her sigh and nod. “Don’t make so much noise so early in the morning.” She scolded them as they followed her, giggling and skipping down the hall behind her. “Don’t touch the newborn Kunwar Akhil; you will scare Lakshmi.” The familiar alarmed voice made Kunwar Partap stop gathering hay as he placed them down, wiped his forehead and glanced over his shoulder at the cowshed. There was some g...

Soul's Cry

Image
The doorbell rang, making him stare at it. Setting his paper aside, he stared at the clock. Opening the door, he saw an unfamiliar face smiling at him. “Here is your delivery, sir” he took the pen from the boy and signed in the designated space, taking the box wrapped in purple in his hand. He smiled at it. A lady was waiting at the gates of the college campus, with a satchel bag, in casual jeans  and a tee; her hair flew in a ponytail over her shoulder, and her eyes were searching.  Staring at the watch, she sighed and murmured a curse. Beside her stood a couple; the girl  was blushing at the bunch of red roses she had just received from the boy. A typical couple  scene! She shrugged. Her attention was drawn toward the bike that screeched to a halt in front of her.  “Sorry, sorry.” he took off his helmet and took a deep breath. “For you” She frowned at the red rose in his hand, and he frowned at her face. That was the day he realised this girl was diff...

Rainbow

Image
What happens when the Sun falls in love with the grey clouds? A Rainbow.   She smiled, staring up at the small arc of colours in the grayscale skyline. “What is that?” an eager child on the road was pointing at the sky. Her mother smiled. “God’s paint palette.” She smiled at the sight. Once, a five-year-old, much more eager than this one, had asked the same of her mother. Years have passed by. And the rainbow remained an eager mind’s wonder, forever. They have, however, diminished over the years, due to man’s torture of his habitat. She sighed at the fading colour once before getting into a cab. Alone, the cab was silent until it filled with Kishore Kumar’s melodious voice. She smiled to herself; the driver had song choices like hers. The water droplets started pouring on the glass panes shortly after that . She closed her eyes.  The smell of his cologne was as mesmerising as his smile. She had drooled shamelessly at the groom’s best friend at her cousin’s wedding. He had aske...
