Delhi Chalo!

Early at Dawn Pratap's black Sedan hooted in front of her door. She walked out, trolley in hand, wearing brown Skinny Fit Trousers paired with a white net top. Her hair was open, and the glasses acted like a hairband much like their first meet at the airport. He kept staring as she realized it and avoided eye contact.
" Wah, You are looking... elegant today."
" Yup, trying something different." She shrugged.
" Why? Neons are out of fashion?"
" Elegant is in!"
" Kiske liye itna sab?"
" Tumhare Liye. " He stared at her as his heart skipped a beat and she burst laughing.
" Am joking! Look at your face!"
"Of course, you are joking." His tone changed.

They reached Udaipur with Ajabde constantly talking about what one must do when one goes to Delhi.
" Ajab... we are not..."
" I know I know it's work work work! But still, you know..." She continued her list as he looked at her excited face. His stare made her a little nervous as she spoke more in nervousness.
They reached the airport.
" Mujhe window wali seat chahiye."
" Thik hai, calm down." They had a sandwich each at the airport before takeoff.

" Princy dekho Pahar, wow dekho dessert dikh raha hai... Paani... Blue hai paani paani paani...Tumko pasand hai?" She turned to see he was asleep with his headphones on. She frowned. Then smiled looking at his sleeping face.
He woke up a little before landing and saw her reading, or rather trying to decipher a business magazine in vain.
" Uth gaye tum? Chalo selfie lete hai!"
" What the..." FLASH!
" #flight #delhi #work #Boss #Princy #yayamback " She went on.
" Tag me."
" You sure?"
" Haan."
" Okay!"

They took a cab from the Airport to the hotel as Ajabde got lost in her " Shortest route to the hotel" and the driver got them there in an hour. Pratap was talking to the receptionist while Ajabde was looking around.
" Two Single rooms, on the 11th floor, thik hai?" He said as she nodded.
" Go and get ready, we will leave in an hour for the meeting."
She was wearing a corporate grey skirt and a white blouse, as he came out in his blue suit and aviator glasses.
" Don't talk much okay, let me do the talking."
" Yes Sir!"
" Shutup!"

She walked out as he followed her to the hired car. They went to the Government office and were led to the Government Officer who was in charge of the Welfare Funds.
" Good morning Mr Pratap Singh, you are very famous."
" Morning Mr. Agarwal, this is Ms. Punwar." Pratap didn't like the way the young man stared at Ajab.
" So what is your college going to feature? Why should we fund you?"
" You see..."
" Not you, her!"
" Pardon?" Ajabde looked up at the man looking at her lustily. She shifted uneasily.
" You tell me Madam ji."
" She won't tell I will." Came a determined reply.
" Mr Singh, you brought an employee who doesn't know..."
" She is not my employee, she is ... family. Ajabde, leave the room."
" What?"
" Leave the room right now, am going to talk here man to man."
" Mr. Singh don't create ..." Ajabde walked out as the door shut behind her. She is... family. A smile crept in.

He walked out annoyed saying, " Let's go back." She followed him quietly. He appeared a bit disturbed.
" Ajab." He spoke up after 15mins. " Am sorry you had to face this, I shouldn't have brought you..."
" No No, If he was not the fund chief or something I would have punched him in the face!" A smile appeared on his face hearing her.
" You are okay?"
" Pretty good!"
Reaching the hotel he said, "Change and come down we will have dinner early. Waise bhi lunch skipped."
" Princy... Ummm... the fund..."
" They will let us know by tomorrow."
" What do you think they will give the fund?"
" Well... yes, he knows my holds and I kind of might have scared him a little." He smiled at her.

She got dressed and got down for dinner in a floral knee-length dress.
" I guess the bright colours are back!" He smiled.
" The plain ones seem unlucky." She shrugged.
" If they approve the funds, we are leaving for Nainital tomorrow evening. If they don't I need to give him a piece of my mind then leave the next morning!" He said, eating. She looked up at him and then back at her plate. Woah! Yeh Princy toh Knight in shinning Armour nikla!
" You said something?"
" No... The food is good."

He was in his room, in his bedtime boxers, the TV on, and looking through his emails on his phone when a knock resounded. He looked at the watch. 11.38PM. He frowned and opened it to find Ajabde Punwar, laptop in hand, pink pyjamas, black teeshirt, standing at the door.
" Ajab?"
" Princy, Mere room mein Ghost hai!"
" Kya hai?" He asked startled.
" Ghost!"
" Kya hua?"
" I feel like am being watched, strange noises. " She sat down on the couch.
" Dekho, aisa kuch nahi hai. Go back!"
" Ajeeb ho, maine bola na Ghost hai."
" Okay, ek kaam karte hai, you stay here, main jaa raha hoon tumhare room mein." He was about to leave when she shouts " Ruko!"
" Kya hua ab?"
" Agar ghost mere piche yaha aa gaya toh?"
" Kya plan hai tumhari?"
" Tum so jao, main couch pe baithke movie dekhti hoon lappie pe."
" What? Yaha? In my room?"
" Haan, ab dekho, mere aur tumhare sivae kisko pata hai main kaha hoon, toh problem kya hai?"
" Yeh tum pehle bhi kar chuki ho?"
" Nahi, yeh first time hai, pehle I always travelled with mom, ya friends."
" Uff thik hai!"
" Usko Bura lagega kya?"
" Kisko?"
" Your someone." She made him laugh.
" hassee Kyun?"
" Kuch Nahi."
" Umm... Princy... "
" Kya?"
" I don't mean to embarrass you par you shouldn't be in boxers you know, ladki ke samne, not that I mind, log galat sochenge." He turned red hurrying to get his track pants while she set up her movie playlist.

At 3AM he woke hearing her voice.
" Kamine, tujhe kya laga , tu mujhe chod dega toh main zindagi bhar tarapti rahungi? Tarpega tu...."
He stared wide-eyed watching her move her hands and say out the dialogue loudly. She was watching " Jab We Met" with headphones on!
" Ajab!"
" Kya??"
" Hushhh!"
" Oops sorry!"

He woke up at 5.30 AM for a jog and saw her asleep on the couch. He took the blanket from the bed and put it on her. He jogged and came back watching her still asleep. He dressed in his formal. He went out, leaving a note, " I will be back by Lunch, will have lunch together."

She woke up at 8.30 AM looking around and her eyes fell on the note.
She saw the blanket on her and with a sleepy smile she walked with it to his bed and fell asleep.
He came back and saw her still sleeping, this time on his bed. He ordered lunch and decided to call her when it arrived.

Ajabde opened her eyes to see Pratap working on his laptop on the couch, still in his formal. She suddenly jumped up saying, " What the hell am I doing in your bed?"
" Pagal ho? Khud jaake leti!"
" Ohh haan!!!" She scratched her head.
" Jao fresh hooke ao, I ordered lunch here."
" Yaaa!"
" Ohh, Approval aa gaya, I booked a car to leave at 4PM."
" Yay! Darr gaya woh crap tumse!" She laughed.

At 4PM he went out to the rented car and saw Ajabde standing there trolley in hand, in a rosy pink Anarkali, her hair braided. Her kohl-smudged eyes didn't fail to make his heart skip a beat.
They got into the car and she caught him staring.
" Kya hai?"
" Kya hai?" He repeated as she looked away. He bit his tongue.
" Dekho kitna sundar jagah hai! Hills! Lakes. Beautiful!"
" Haan it's good."
" Main na yaha ek ghar kharidungi kabhi by god."
" Tumhara sweeper kharidega!"
" Sweeper?"
" Sweep me off my feet!"
" Uff kya galti ki jo bola maine!" He laughed.
" Waise..." She asked, " Woh kaisi hai?"
" Kaun?"
" Tumhari waali."
" She is like... Paani."
" Matlab?"
" She is everywhere in my world!" He stared at her eyes saying this but something made Ajabde sad.
" Woah, Princy is in Loveland!"
" You are never in Loveland?"
" Never, Ajabde Punwar ko pyaar hona aasaan nahi hai! 21 saal mein nahi hua!" She said it like she wanted to believe it. He looked away, a little restless.

They reached the hotel and this time Pratap booked a suite with two single bedrooms. Reaching the suite she said,
" Suite Kyun?"
" So that you sleep in your own room and adhi raat ko bhoot banke darao na...Darwaza khula rakh k apne kamre mein so jana"
" Maine na Zindagi mein na socha tha k suite pe rahungi."
" Accha? Zindagi abhi bohot baaki hai."

" Haan par hum kaha affort kar paate waise, kitne dreams hai, wishes hai..."
Tum bata ke toh dekho tumhari saari wishes puri karunga. He stared at her babbling.
" Tumhare bacche le jaenge tumko suites, foreign tours n all!"
" Tum kya mere baccho ko adopt kar loge jo yeh saab..."
" Shayed uska zarurat nahi..."
" Kya matlab?"
" Kuch nahi, Nanaji se kab milne jana hai?"
" First thing in the morning!"
" Then dinner order kar do, main car ki baat karke aata hoon, l leave at dawn."
" Haan time bhi hai na, we can roam a bit of Nainital."
" Great! Done!"

Harsh Truths of Life

Ajbante Kanwar found herself by the Menal waterfall that made enough noise for her to not hear Kunwar Partap approaching with the horses. She was lost in thoughts.  After two days of playing host to the royals of Bundi, yesterday the king had informed her father that they would start their journey to Chittorgarh early in the morning. As she snuck out of the palace she saw the pompous procession of elephants decorated with gold ornaments and horses with golden quilts over their seat being led out by the Bundi soldiers. The palace was awake earlier than she anticipated and she had to squeeze in a little time and excuse herself for her “prayers”. But as she sat by the waterfall she was unsure whether he could come. She looked up at the sky clearing into dawn as she sighed and shook her head. He must be preparing to leave. Rajkumari Ajbante Kanwar stood up, brushing her lehenga as she turned to leave. If she wasted more time, Daata would scold her. She had not worn her warrior attire u...

Reassuring Gift

“I got these for you.”  Rajkumari Ajbante Kanwar had just made her way to the other side of the temple premises, with her dupatta hiding her face, while her guards, attendants and palanquin waited at the other end of the Math premises at Menal. The moment she spotted Kunwar Partap across the temple complex near the forest with Bijli he straightened himself and held out a bundle of glass bangles. Ajbante Kanwar looked perplexed at his reassuring nod. “Me?” She asked, unsure of what she heard. He nodded again. “Bhai Shakti dragged me to the fair yesterday and I brought green bangles for Ranima so I thought…” He cleared his throat looking unsurely at the Magenta bangles on his hand. “Why?” Her question interrupted his chain of thoughts as his smile faded. “Did you not like it?” He looked unsure. He had never bought anything for anyone before except for Ranima. Ranima never disliked anything he chose for her. While Kunwar Partap scanned the shop, looking for a perfect bangle for ...

Touch of Reality

“Baisa, there is a letter for you.” Kasturi, Rajkumari Ajbante Kanwar’s personal attendant, had a scroll in her hand as she frowned. The only people who wrote to her were her friend Saubhagyawati and Daata from war. Both of them were in Bijoliya. She took the scroll from Kasturi as a shiver ran down her spine.  Rao Ramrakh Punwar attended the celebration of Rajkumari Padmavati's grand wedding. He had come home and told stories of the grandeur. He had received a sweetmeat gift to take back home as well. As the children indulged in it, Ajbante Kanwar had thought that maybe the celebration had caught up with Kunwar Partap and he was unable to write the letter he had promised. But a week had passed since the Bidai entourage had left Bijoliya and she had not heard from him. Ajbante Kanwar cursed her expectations of taking his words literally and found herself in tears one night. She had been scared when she realised that the lack of communication hurt her. She attributed it to he...

Towards You

Kunwar Pratap and Ajabde were friends. He didn't feel awkward sharing his plans and thoughts with her anymore. She was more than happy to advise him on everything. She was happy he listened to her advice before taking or discarding them, be it on what to wear to Padmavati's Sagai or how to befriend the revolting Bhils. He loved the way Ajabde always used metaphors from Puranas and Ramayanas to explain the toughest things so easily. She expressed herself so well, so easily that it amazed him.   The Afghans were now led by Mehmood Shah. They have made secret territories in the forests and waited to attack. Rawatji and his spies had confirmed the news and Udai Singh had warned Mehmood Shah to withdraw his troops from Mewar in vain. Now, it was time they declared war. Mehmood Shah had limited resources in Mewar. And his spies clearly suggested that in no way could he win, especially with Kunwar Pratap leading his troops. He was having second thoughts about the war. One of his aides...

The Wedding Party

Kunwar Partap was impressed with the kind of welcome the Bijoliya palace gave him and Kunwar Shakti. The streets were clean and decorated with makeshift gates of flowers and lamps, the main entrance had a Toran hoisted with the freshly cleaned idol of Lord Ganesha over it, smeared with Haldi and Kumkum and as their horses entered the guarded gates, attendants stood on either side sprinkling scented perfumes. From atop the entrance maids sprinkled flower petals on the princes as conch shells blew and they could now see Rao Ramrakh Punwar himself at the entrance of the palace flanked on either side by his kins and chieftains. Kunwar Partap dismounted from his horse as Kunwar Shakti followed him up the couple of stairs to the main entrance of the Bijoliya palace, watching Kunwar Partap fold his hands as Raoji did the same. Soon, Ramrakh Punwar stepped aside, letting his wife come forward, her veil drawn to her forehead, as she smiled at the princes and welcomed them with Aarti. Her ...

Anticipation

Rana Udai Singh had managed to upset some local chieftains especially the Bhills and Kunwar Partap had to play mediator between them. It was not until the situations of internal rebellion were dealt with that the marriage of Rajkumar Padmavati was planned. Dheer Bai was right, one extravagant celebration of the win was enough for the gossip to die down especially when Udai Singh openly praised and rewarded his first born with a sword. He was no longer the insecure king but a doting father. How short people’s collective memory was. With that, most of the Rani Mahal had also forgotten about the suspicions on Dheer Bai. All except Rani Jivanta Bai who still did not allow Kunwar Partap anywhere near her. Rani Dheer Bai had entered the inner hallway to find the king with his chief queen and Sajja Bai there. Upon her appearance, Sajja Bai smiled politely asking her to take a seat. “We were just discussing some of the festivities for the wedding. Come, Behena. Sit with us. Ranaji says you mus...

See You Soon

Kunwar Partap entered the relatively quiet stable premises at the break of dawn checking on Bijli who was asleep, when he heard the sound of anklets near the cow shed. He walked up to the entrance of the stable, from where he could see her, her dupatta placed loosely over her wet hair, devoid of jewellery the way he never saw a royal lady, with a basket of flowers in one hand and a plate of sweets on the other. She was distributing sweets to the cow keepers, veterinarians and everyone who came by on the occasion of Lakshmi giving birth to her calf. “What will you name her, Hukum?” an old man asked. She smiled shyly, pressing her lips together. “Mandakini, Kakasa.” The old man smiled at her suggestion. “Like the kund? Very nice.” Kunwar Partap walked up to Lakshmi’s shed only after most people had dispersed to their work. Ajbante Kanwar heard footsteps behind her and turned with the plate that now had one sweetmeat left. Alarmed at his sight and at the lack of options she could offer fr...

Survival

Ye woh dandal hai ke jisse Tu nikalega mujhko Tu hi rakshak Tu hi sathi mera. "Pishima." Prabhavati applied oil on Sadhana Debi's knees as she spoke "I was wondering, now that the Bouma is here to take care of the house, the Roy Chowdhury mansion will no longer miss Didi." She smiled faintly "After her, things would fall apart… if not for Trilochan da…" Sadhana shook her head. "It's been two days. Don't even compare them to Shubhra." She almost snapped. "Especially that girl." Prabhavati looked up. "She acts like she has been caged. She is always interested more in the outside world of men. That's not a good sign." She shook her head. "There is a saying, Khay day Pakhiti boner dike Akhiti ." Sadhana fussed "She is like that." Prabhavati smiled silently. "Mejo Bouma is educated too, isn't she?" Sadhana looked suspicious. "I bet she will also be pushed to it. You know my mo...

Tere kismat teri haaton se hi likhi jaegi Aniruddha checked his pocket watch again, restlessly. His hand reached for the car horn. He stopped at the sound of her approaching and stared up at the doorway.  "Sorry Sorry," Bondita murmured getting into the car.  "We will be late." His voice had urgency. "Ahm. For the school thing." Bondita tried hard to suppress a giggle. Her amused eyes met his warning glance as she stopped smiling. Aniruddha started the car. "Look what I got for Didi." She pointed at the covers of the back seat. She tugged at it with her hand and revealed a brown paper packet. "What is that?" He inquired. "I hid it in the morning before anyone woke up. It's a new saree. For her." Aniruddha smiled with a nod. They soon reached Balurghat, where Nikhil had given them the address of one of his Brahma Samaj friends.  "I have never seen a Brahmo marriage." Bondita gushed.  They were led by Nikhil's ...

Vows

Pratap was staring at the Havan Kund that was lit up for the wedding as he sat in the mandap doing the Ganesh Puja. Two days and so many rituals he had to do. All he knew was like an obedient and ideal son he had followed every ritual his mothers and the Panditji told him to do. They said he didn't understand the significance of many rituals now, he would later on. He didn't actually care. All he wanted was to get over the wedding really fast so that he could consider the other important things in life. Did I just think others are important? No, the most important. The Turk Invader was surely going to use his diversion for his own profit. Somehow he could read Akbar's mind too well. He had been teased beyond his imagination by Shakti as Chakrapani accidentally told him about the Mandir incident. He swore to make his friend pay once when he was back home.   " She is here." Hansa Bai's voice made him look up as people stared to his right. Ajabde's hands and...
