Party in Udaipur

" Get me the car please, Kaka!" He kept his phone and turned to see her
checking hers. A red Ferrari sports car drove up as the driver handed over the key to Pratap. Ajabdeh's eyes widened.
" Woah!!! This is a cool man! You should mention having a car like this. Pata hota to Kuch aur pehenti!"
" No, what you are wearing is fine!" He opened the door for her. " I can't believe this! " She gushed.
" What?" He frowned as he sat at the wheel.
" Wait, let me take a selfie!" He frowned at her some more.
She uploads the picture on Instagram as she says aloud " Hashtag(#) Palace #Royalty #Ferrari #outwithaprince #omg"
He stares at her amused, " Really? Out with a prince?"
" Kyaa? My friends in Delhi are always like Kaunsa Gaon mein You stay gal! This is my chance to show off a little!"
He shook his head " I can't believe this!"
" Can I tag you?" She asked, ignoring his amusement. " No! Wait... Do you follow me?" He frowned.
" Ya so?" She shrugged.
" Nothing!" He looked surprised. “I didn’t know that.”
“I don’t expect someone with a blue tick to even know.” She shrugged.

The car drove out of the archways as Ajabdeh waved to a much-surprised Kaka.
" Chalo Princy, Where are the engaged specimens?" She said turning to the wheel. " Firstly, Princy sounds like a dog! secondly, what on earth are engaged specimens?" He asked.
" Haan! You see, let me explain..." He shook his head, it was going to be a long drive.
" ... They are getting married, so to all the unmarried people they are like specimens. They go through the experiment, we learn from it..."
" Learn what?" He frowned.
" That you should never ever get married. Ever!" She shook her head.
He laughed aloud. " I thought all girls have this prince in a white horse dream." " Not this girl!"
" Well, sadly I have to get married." He sighed.

" Why?" She frowned.
" Royalty, sole heir, empire!" He shrugged.
" Like To a Princess?" Ajabdeh narrowed her eyes.
" Maybe..." He shrugged with half a smile concentrating on the road.
" Ewww, so typical. It's like a live fairytale." She looked away to her side.
He stopped the car where another car was already parked. It was a white BMW. Chakrapani waved at his friend and stepped out, followed by Bhagwati, in a pretty white knee-length dress. Ajabdeh saw Bhago and forgot about her gown. " Eeee Bhago!!!!"
Within a few seconds, Pratap saw her get out of the car and rush towards a surprised Bhagwati and the next moment with a loud thud she was on the road. Ajabdeh Punwar had tripped on her own gown.
She sat like a child cursing, " Damn This Gown!"
Chakrapani was surprised but quick to help her up, and Bhago asked, " Are you all right?" Pratap just couldn't control his laughter at what just happened before his eyes! She glanced, narrowing her eyes at him, then came up with a taunt, " Wow! So princely of you!"
" Now, I am with Ajabdeh Punwar, Kuch toh asar hoga na!" He laughed again, and all four of them started laughing.

They arrived at the party. The grand hotel made Ajabdeh say " Woah, you bought this thing?"
" Ya, I did!"
They entered the private banquet as his friends and acquaintances scrutinised the girl with him.
" Guys, meet Ajabdeh Punwar, she is Ram Uncle's daughter and Bhagwati's childhood friend." He introduced her to his friends.
" I am Ven. Venkatesh actually. Pleased to meet you, I must say you are very pretty. " Ven held out his hand to her.
" Ohh I know that!" Her answer stunned him and made Pratap smile. He saw Chaks tell Ven by hand that she was a bit mad!
"I'm thirsty." Ajabdeh declared.
" Let me grab you a drink then." Ven insisted. " Well, anything non-alcoholic!"
" You don't drink?" Pratap asked, surprised.

" This girl needs no drink to have fun." She winked as he turned red and looked away.
" OMG Princy you are so shy!" She laughed.
" Here, juice!" Ven came with a glass, " Baojiraj is so shy that you are practically the first girl he is introducing us to."
" Really? Princy! Didn't expect this from you!" She took a sip. " Why?" He frowned.
" You look good, Matlab thik thak, you are rich! Then there are all these girls staring at you right now." She smiled matter-of-factly.
" I won't say I enjoy the attention." "Boooring!" She shook her head.
" Speaking of girls!" Chak interrupted, " Baojiraj, run!" " What?" Pratap stared at him clueless.

All eyes were at the door, where a beautiful lady, about nineteen, had entered in a red, backless dress and the male eyes hovered on her. She looked around and smiled at Pratap.
" Damn! How could she spot me with so many people around so easily?" Ajabdeh heard him murmur.
" Hi, Pratap!" The girl waved with a smile. " Rajkumari Phool Kanwar!" He smiled.
" Call me Princess Rathore." Ajabdeh's loud slurp turned the attention on her. " Who is she?" The princess seemed annoyed.
" Ajabdeh, my childhood friend." Pratap smiled, leaning a little towards her.
" No, I am not his childhood friend, I have known him since childhood." Ajabdeh moved away, a little surprised.
"Pratap you..." Phool started as Ajabdeh took another sip.
" Ajab, you wanted to dance right? Come!" He dragged her by her hand to the dance floor before she could react with her mouth full of juice. She gulped it down saying, " What? Me? When did I?"
" Keep quiet and dance." He spoke. " I can't," She shrugged.
" Follow me!"
" By the way, I thought her name was Fool!"
" That only you can think" He smiled as she giggled. " You… dating her?"
" You think? No, she is a college mate, acquaintance." He shook his head. " I hate slow songs." She started complaining " DJ DJ!!!"

" What do you want?" Pratap held her shoulders and asked. " A louder song… more hippy! " she smiled dizzily.
" Ajabdeh. Are you alright?" Pratap frowned at her.
" Yes, I loved the juice." He shot a glance at Ven who was smiling. He shook his head "Damn!"
The music grew louder. " I want to go home!" She let go of his hand and collided with another guy.
“Sorry!” she was quick to apologise.
" Home? But you wanted louder music!" Pratap asked, surprised.
" Are you mad? I hate loud music. Take me home Pratap. Now!" She sulked like a baby.
" Did you just call me Pratap?" He asked surprised. "Hush! Princy!” She started giggling
" Let's take you home!" He shook his head and dragged her away from the crowd by her hand.
He made her sit in the car and went to grab the keys. She moved to the driver's seat shouting " I wanna drive this Baby, Now! Where is the Key?"
" Have you ever driven sober?" Pratap asked amused. " I drive better than Lewis!" She shrugged.
" Lewis? Who is that?" He raised his brows. " Buddhu!!! Hamilton!" She giggled.
" Ajabdeh you are making no sense, move aside." He opened the door. " No, am driving, bhrooom bhrroooom gooooo Ferarriiiiiii"
He pushed her to the other side.

" Music."
" No."
" Main Tenu Samjhawan ki... Na tere bina lagta jee" Her melodious voice filled the air as he drove out. She sang the song on a loop in the next thirty minutes before falling asleep. He smiled at her sleeping figure and smiled. " So much fun you are!"

Arriving at the Palace he tried in vain to wake her up. He opened the car door and picked her up. He laid her down in her pink room and removed the hair locks falling on her face, then covered her with a blanket he instructed the maid. " Be with her if she needs anything."
Jaivanta Bai saw a disturbed Pratap drive out of the Palace.

My Everything

Kunwar Pratap stormed into the Mahal at Gogunda. Happy faces of the chieftains and soldiers welcomed him as Rao Ramrakh and Rawatji stopped the ongoing Raj tilak. A visibly scared Kunwar Jagmal looked clueless at a visibly angry Kunwar Pratap. Rani Dheerbai Bhattiyani hadn't expected this son of Mewar to show up that too twenty-one days after his father's death. He was not informed as per Dheerbai's instructions. She looked at Rawat Ji. He must have gone to Raoji at Bijolia. No one except them knew where Kunwar Pratap was staying. It was for the safety of his family. " What are you doing Chotima?" A disappointed voice came. She could stoop down so low? " We were about to inform you..." She spoke up in her defence. " When Dheerbai ji?" Maharani Jaivanta Bai, clad in white entered the hall as people bowed before her. " After your son's coronation?" " I did nothing Badima I swear!" A low voice came from Jagmal. " Maha

Chapter Four: Imprisoned

Abhaya was thrown into a room without windows and the doors were chained shut. It was dark and damp and the walls smelled of gathered dust. She could sense the chains being locked as she heard voices outside. She tried to get up but her bruised knees and weak body failed her. She stumbled on the cold stone floor to notice the mattress on one side and a pot of water on the other. What were they going to do to her? Was she the only one here? Where were her parents? In the Summer heat also she felt a shiver in her body. She briefly remembered her house up in flames, the bottles of kerosene being thrown at the open windows. Torches around the house, chanting slogans. The screams of the women. The last time she saw her elder brothers was when they picked up the pistols and canes from around the house. She realised her father was not home when she ran down the corridor towards the chaos, her heart on her throat. The loud sound of the car burning and the screams of her mother made her freeze.

Chapter Three: Pedigree

The Imperial Police work was a tough job. The family had no idea what Superintendent Animesh Kumar Mukhopadhyay went through to provide for his family and their luxurious lives. Abhaya’s father never failed to let his family know that. Every time he drank down his sins. Every time he came home drunk. Every time he beat his wife. Abhaya would often sit awake all night, her pillow pressed against her ears as she sobbed silently, hoping that her mother’s begging sobs and father’s lewd language would stop. One day she had opened the door of her room slightly and was about to step out when her sister-in-law intervened. Her face was dark as she coldly told Abhaya to return to her room. She would be punished if her elder brothers found out about her trying to get out of her chambers at night. Abhaya at twelve knew one truth greater than others. Men were like this, women had to tiptoe around them to serve them as they demanded.  She was intimidated by the regular chores the women of the hous

Struggles and Tests

Kunwar Pratap ran to hug his mother. Jaivanta Bai smiled pleased looking at him. Sajja Bai had accompanied her here with the Bhattiyani queen and had reached out to her sister in Marwar for shelter with the princesses until the war ended. She refused to stay like a commoner at Samant’s house. “Majhli Maasa.” Kunwar Pratap touched her feet and got a hug in return. “ Where is Chotima?” “She went to Mehrangarh.” Jaivanta Bai replied. Dressed simply in a blue lehenga and silver jewellery she still looked elegant. The sound of Payal made everyone turn as Hansa smiled at her daughter. “This is Ajabde. My eldest.” Ajabde stepped forward to touch the queen’s feet while Kunwar Pratap stepped back carefully watching the scene with a smile. Jaivanta Bai cupped her face and noticed her son’s reaction in silence. “Ajabde show them the guest rooms.” After the refreshments, Hansa Bai instructed her while Kunwar Pratap left in a hurry followed by Balwant who now kind of worshipped him.

Disguise

I am not going to lose so easily. I still have my last hope left. Baijilal, I am coming,  Dheerbai smiled to herself as the Palki continued its journey. She had done everything, cried, fallen at Ranaji’s feet and sought forgiveness from Jaivanta Bai to make them believe her. She had won over Ranaji again, enough to accompany them on the journey. Kunwar Pratap smiled at the letter that arrived for him at Telhati. He read it thrice before telling Chakrapani “Ranima wants me to meet them at… Bijolia!” “Laxmi. Eat now, what is wrong with you?” Ajabde was in a bad mood as she scolded Laxmi who refused to eat. “Laxmi. Actually, people don’t know how to talk with love.” The voice behind her made her jump. "Please eat Laxmi.” He walked past her to Laxmi patting her towards the bucket gently. “You…You…” She looked scared. “I…I…” He smiled. “Here?” She frowned. “Here.” He nodded. “Why?” She dreaded the answer. “Because “ He stepped forward as she stepped back. “

Failed Attempts

The ladies were all sited around the bride in the evening planning about the big day the next day as the bride sat unmindfully. "Bindni must be thinking of Kunwarsa " someone giggled. "Or the wedding " another added. Jaivanta Bai looked at an absent-minded Ajabde. She took her hand and led her out of the hall to her chambers. "What happened?" She asked closing the door behind her. "Ji?" She asked surprised. "Why are you tensed?" "Ranima woh...." A knock made her stop as he appeared at the door with Patta. "Ranima you called..." his eyes stopped on her worried face then back at his mother. "Yes, I think Baijilal needs some talking here." She left with a smile closing the door behind her. "Patta." They spoke in unison as the boy looked wide-eyed. "Do not tell anyone who we suspect, is that clear?" Ajabde spoke up. "I know Jija she has a stronghold..." &

Shadows

Kunwar Pratap had indeed found his shadow in her, or so everyone said. Their love, understanding and respect for each other were the talks of the Ranimahal Baithaks. Kunwar Pratap was now the Senapati of Mewar again and all his political decisions reflected her calm opinions and firmly believed. Udai Singh had honoured Patta and Ajabde in secret for their bravery, much to Ajabde's relief. Ajabde's growing influence forced Dheerbai to stay low until her favourable time came. Kunwar Pratap would always talk about his missions with her. Ajabde would always wait months praying for his safety and awaiting his return. He always asked her for advice on political matters. Ajabde found peace In her books and Kanha Ji and Ranima’s bhajans while he stayed busy. Ranima forced Ajabde to teach the princesses some sword skills. Sometimes Kunwar Pratap enjoyed watching her in secret not knowing she was fully aware of his glares. When Chittorgarh received the good news of an heir, Ajabde

Towards You

Kunwar Pratap and Ajabde were friends. He didn't feel awkward sharing his plans and thoughts with her anymore. She was more than happy to advise him on everything. She was happy he listened to her advice before taking or discarding them, be it on what to wear to Padmavati's Sagai or how to befriend the revolting Bhils. He loved the way Ajabde always used metaphors from Puranas and Ramayanas to explain the toughest things so easily. She expressed herself so well, so easily that it amazed him.   The Afghans were now led by Mehmood Shah. They have made secret territories in the forests and waited to attack. Rawatji and his spies had confirmed the news and Udai Singh had warned Mehmood Shah to withdraw his troops from Mewar in vain. Now, it was time they declared war. Mehmood Shah had limited resources in Mewar. And his spies clearly suggested that in no way could he win, especially with Kunwar Pratap leading his troops. He was having second thoughts about the war. One of his aides

Unexpected

" This is your room Ranisa." Hansa opened the door to the well-furnished large guest room of the Bijolia Palace. The diyas were lit and the room was neat and clean. " Your Daasis decorate the rooms well." Jaivanta Bai looked around. " Oh, Ranisa. all these... " Hansa smiled proudly. " All these are done by my daughter." " Your daughter?" Jaivanta Bai smiled surprised. " Milwayiye ." Jaivanta Bai was eager to meet her. " Ajabde! Ratan!" Hansa called as the girls came in. 13-year-old Ajabde preferred a simple lehenga in a pink and blue Dupatta clad over her head. She was the first one to calmly bend down and touch Maharani's feet as a five-year-old Ratan came running. " Ajabde is very talented in sewing, gardening and home decor. She can also...." " Maa Sa...." Ajabde's soft protest stopped Hansa as Jaivanta Bai smiled. " Accha, I won't tell but these are your good talents, right?

In Love??

Ajabde was bedridden over the next few weeks. She was too weak to sit up or do things on her own and the medicine men insisted she needed complete rest to heal. Kunwar Pratap insisted on staying by her side which Ajabde firmly refused. She didn't want to be a distraction from his work. That would break her vow, she said. Kunwar Pratap just smiled knowing she was so adamant and how smartly she convinced people. Ajabde was never bored though! The Queens and Princesses constantly came to check on her and keep her company. All except Dheerbai who only came once, when Ranaji visited her. Ajabde was getting better each day as the Vaid came to check on her and suggested it was time she could start leading a normal life again. Her wound still hurt a little and sometimes she felt dizzy due to the weakness but the Vaid said that too would go in two or three days. Ajabde was a fighter. Jaivanta Bai was proud when the Vaid said that Kunwaranisa had the strongest willpower he had ever seen.   K
