The Royal Wedding Preparations

A huge procession made its way through the roads inside Chittorgarh, People had gathered on the main road of the fort to see it go. Among the horses and foot soldiers, there was a well-decorated royal palanquin. Maharani Jaivanta Bai had sent that, especially for the future Kuwarani of Mewar. Ajabde sat in it, guarded by two foot-soldiers on each side, her heart pounding as the palace came nearer. She heard people's voices as they tried to catch a glimpse of the girl who stole their favourite son's heart.

Meanwhile, at the palace, a huge crowd of subjects had gathered for the official introduction of the future queen. A platform of appearances was laid and well decorated for the event. At his Chambers, he was excited that he would meet 'her after such a long time. They had exchanged letters like he had promised all these months. He wrote to her without the royal seal and she happily responded. Yet there was so much more to tell her about his trip around the country.

The palanquin was lowered on the path of flower petals leading to the palace. Two maids helped her out, as her mother and sister came up behind her. Flower petals were rained on her to welcome her to her would-be In-Laws' home. He stood all the way up the stairs on the platform. Happy at her sight!

She could see him smile down at her from behind her dupatta. Their families greeted each other with gifts. He touched her parent's feet and she touched his. Jaivanta Bai hugged Ajabde.
" Come, Meet the subjects"
Rana Udai Singh's guard declared to the onlookers " Presenting to you, your favourite son's would-be wife and Mewar's future Kuwarani Sa Ajabde Punwar of Bijolia, Daughter of Rao Ram Rakh Punwar." She stepped forward her hands folded as the crowd cheered. He stood beside her, happy that his subjects liked her.
" You see this Ajabde, our subjects love you already." He whispered to her.
" Can I go down and meet them Ranima?" Everyone was shocked at her plea but he was happy she loved them back. The Rana gave his approval as they stepped down from the podium together to greet the commoners.

Elders blessed them, young ones were in awe of the new princess. Ajabde was happy to meet these people. Suddenly she felt a pull at her dupatta. Turning back she saw a little girl with a flower in hand.
" Are you a princess?" The innocent face asked her. Ajabde smiled and knelt down before the child. Taking the flower in hand she kissed the child " No, I am just a girl like you!"
" Can I be a princess too?"
" You already are!" The subjects were already in awe of this soon-to-be queen.
" She is just like our Baujiraj. No ego at all." " She seems to be Baujiraj's shadow." were the whispers.

He happily came up behind her and asked " What's your name ?"
" Latika." He nodded at Ajabde. Ajabde took out a ring from her finger and gave it to the little girl in awe. The crowd cheered their Princess. Back at the podium, Rani Jaivanta Bai told Ajabde's mother " She was born to be his, they are so much alike."
Ajabde's family was escorted to the guest quarters by Rawal Chundawat, one of the important generals. Ajabde was in awe to see such huge guest quarters. The main hall was already undergoing repairs for the wedding and Ratnawati and Ajabde looked around the place in awe. A messenger interrupted them.
" Ranaji has asked for Raoji to be present at the court immediately. The royal priest is here." Her parents left in a hurry.

She was unpacking her things in her room quietly when his voice startled her. " Ajabde..."
" Kunwarsa?" She looked at him confused. " What are you doing here?"
" You like this room?"
" Yes... But..."
" Ranima is preparing your room back in the palace herself."
" Kunwar Pratap you want something?" Her voice indicated he was not supposed to be there.
" I came with some news."
She looked at him as he smiled. She missed this teasing smile so much!
" Pandit ji fixed a date next week."
" Ji?" Their conversation was interrupted by footsteps.
" I have to go, see you at the tilak." He ran off.

Her mother entered the room with a smiling face.
" The Rajpurohit said the nakshatra 5 days later is perfect. Sangeet is tomorrow. We have a lot to do Ajabde"
That evening the Royal tailors and jewellers accompanied Jaivanta Bai to the guest houses. They took the measurements and the designs for the royal jewellery. Jaivanta Bai handed over some family jewellery to Ajabde's mother for her, as per the royal traditions.

Preparations for the Sangeet were in a full swing! The maids were everywhere, cleaning and decorating the halls with lights and flowers. Gifts were being arranged for the guests and hundreds of delicacies were cooked. The Ladies were welcomed to the upper halls as the men made merry in the lower ones. Ajabde sat clad in as the dancers entertained them. Her hands were being painted in alta by some maids.

After the guests departed and she got rid of her heavy jewellery and clothes, she sat in her room alone, a lamp giving a dim view of the walls and she was lost in her thoughts. Suddenly, she heard a noise in the hallway. Grabbing the knife from the fruit bowl she gathered her courage to walk up to her door. She was about to shout when he put his hand over her face " Husshhh, it's me."
" Kunwar Pratap you...."
" I hate these rituals Ajabde, we don't get to meet or talk." He let go of her and very comfortably sat on her bed.
" Kunwarsa, how did you come here?"
" I am the prince of this palace Ajabde, nobody can stop me." She stared at him deeply. Ignoring her glances he confessed, " I came climbing the back wall."
" What? Why? Are you hurt?" Concern filled her eyes and made him laugh.
" Hush" She warned him.
" Tomorrow we have Tilak. I can't wait for my new sword. Have you seen it?" He was like a child excited to see his new toy.
" No, but I will tomorrow when I perform its puja."
" Have you been practising your sword fighting skills? The ones I taught you?"
" No... I ..." Ajabde was looking for excuses.
" I will teach you more when you come to live with me." He smiled at her as she blushed.
" Now you should leave."
" Only three more days, after that you can never tell me to leave." His voice teased again as she looked at him with a straight face.

The next morning both the Palaces were waking up to Havan and Puja. Pratap and Ajabde performed their Ganapati pujas before getting ready for the Tilak. Ajabde's mama presented Pratap with the royal sword, clothes, jewellery and horses. This sword was to cut through the enemies for many wars to come! Pratap's Mama presented Ajabde with some jewellery from Bundi. They were blessed by the elders. Sitting across the room from each other, not a glance exchanged they spend the tilak rasam.

Preparations were going on for the Haldi. Chandan, Haldi and holy water were brought and pasted in huge quantities to bathe the Bride and Groom in Tumeric paste and milk to purify them. Ajabde was clad in a yellow lehenga as per the traditions and Pratap in white Dhoti. Haldi was smeared on the unmarried groom and taken to the bride's palace. Married women, mothers and sisters smeared Haldi on the couple. Bathed in milk, the prince adorned his wedding attire. His mother put on his Pagri and Sehra. The people of Chittor were already celebrating with conch shells and crackers. The beautiful Bride was ready in her red lehenga, awaiting her prince's arrival. Chittor gathered on the streets to see their favourite son's wedding procession go by.

At the guest quarters sat a commoner girl, hands trembling, heart pounding, waiting to be a Royal, not knowing the path she chose was going to be difficult but life with him worth a lifetime. Ajabde Punwar waited to be Kunwarani Ajabde Baisa as Kunwar Pratap got on his white horse, looking like a Prince every girl dreamt for. His heart pounded too, but his excitement was of immense joy. So much fight for her was finally worth it. She was going to be his, Soon.

Chapter Four: Imprisoned

Abhaya was thrown into a room without windows and the doors were chained shut. It was dark and damp and the walls smelled of gathered dust. She could sense the chains being locked as she heard voices outside. She tried to get up but her bruised knees and weak body failed her. She stumbled on the cold stone floor to notice the mattress on one side and a pot of water on the other. What were they going to do to her? Was she the only one here? Where were her parents? In the Summer heat also she felt a shiver in her body. She briefly remembered her house up in flames, the bottles of kerosene being thrown at the open windows. Torches around the house, chanting slogans. The screams of the women. The last time she saw her elder brothers was when they picked up the pistols and canes from around the house. She realised her father was not home when she ran down the corridor towards the chaos, her heart on her throat. The loud sound of the car burning and the screams of her mother made her freeze.

Struggles and Tests

Kunwar Pratap ran to hug his mother. Jaivanta Bai smiled pleased looking at him. Sajja Bai had accompanied her here with the Bhattiyani queen and had reached out to her sister in Marwar for shelter with the princesses until the war ended. She refused to stay like a commoner at Samant’s house. “Majhli Maasa.” Kunwar Pratap touched her feet and got a hug in return. “ Where is Chotima?” “She went to Mehrangarh.” Jaivanta Bai replied. Dressed simply in a blue lehenga and silver jewellery she still looked elegant. The sound of Payal made everyone turn as Hansa smiled at her daughter. “This is Ajabde. My eldest.” Ajabde stepped forward to touch the queen’s feet while Kunwar Pratap stepped back carefully watching the scene with a smile. Jaivanta Bai cupped her face and noticed her son’s reaction in silence. “Ajabde show them the guest rooms.” After the refreshments, Hansa Bai instructed her while Kunwar Pratap left in a hurry followed by Balwant who now kind of worshipped him.

Chapter Five: Saved

The next time Swadhin opened the door with starched rice and mashed potato in a bowl he found the previous day’s food across the floor, ants feasting on it. The balm however had been used. His eyes fell on the darker corner of the room and Abhaya was half sitting, her knees crouched to her chest and eyes closed. For a moment Swadhin was scared. Was she breathing? He put the steaming bowl of rice down and approached her carefully. He was about to put his finger near her nose to check when his eyes involuntarily travelled to her chest moving slightly up and down. Swadhin could breathe again. It was then that Abhaya came out of her trance to see him leaning close to her. She screamed. Her voice was muffled as Swadhin in a reflex put his hand over her lips. “Don’t.” He said, alarmed. “You will be slapped again.” Her eyes were wide at his plea. She struggled to get his hand off her mouth as he said again, more firmly. “I am letting go of the hand, but you won’t scream. I brought you food. Y

In Love??

Ajabde was bedridden over the next few weeks. She was too weak to sit up or do things on her own and the medicine men insisted she needed complete rest to heal. Kunwar Pratap insisted on staying by her side which Ajabde firmly refused. She didn't want to be a distraction from his work. That would break her vow, she said. Kunwar Pratap just smiled knowing she was so adamant and how smartly she convinced people. Ajabde was never bored though! The Queens and Princesses constantly came to check on her and keep her company. All except Dheerbai who only came once, when Ranaji visited her. Ajabde was getting better each day as the Vaid came to check on her and suggested it was time she could start leading a normal life again. Her wound still hurt a little and sometimes she felt dizzy due to the weakness but the Vaid said that too would go in two or three days. Ajabde was a fighter. Jaivanta Bai was proud when the Vaid said that Kunwaranisa had the strongest willpower he had ever seen.   K

Disguise

I am not going to lose so easily. I still have my last hope left. Baijilal, I am coming,  Dheerbai smiled to herself as the Palki continued its journey. She had done everything, cried, fallen at Ranaji’s feet and sought forgiveness from Jaivanta Bai to make them believe her. She had won over Ranaji again, enough to accompany them on the journey. Kunwar Pratap smiled at the letter that arrived for him at Telhati. He read it thrice before telling Chakrapani “Ranima wants me to meet them at… Bijolia!” “Laxmi. Eat now, what is wrong with you?” Ajabde was in a bad mood as she scolded Laxmi who refused to eat. “Laxmi. Actually, people don’t know how to talk with love.” The voice behind her made her jump. "Please eat Laxmi.” He walked past her to Laxmi patting her towards the bucket gently. “You…You…” She looked scared. “I…I…” He smiled. “Here?” She frowned. “Here.” He nodded. “Why?” She dreaded the answer. “Because “ He stepped forward as she stepped back. “

My Everything

Kunwar Pratap stormed into the Mahal at Gogunda. Happy faces of the chieftains and soldiers welcomed him as Rao Ramrakh and Rawatji stopped the ongoing Raj tilak. A visibly scared Kunwar Jagmal looked clueless at a visibly angry Kunwar Pratap. Rani Dheerbai Bhattiyani hadn't expected this son of Mewar to show up that too twenty-one days after his father's death. He was not informed as per Dheerbai's instructions. She looked at Rawat Ji. He must have gone to Raoji at Bijolia. No one except them knew where Kunwar Pratap was staying. It was for the safety of his family. " What are you doing Chotima?" A disappointed voice came. She could stoop down so low? " We were about to inform you..." She spoke up in her defence. " When Dheerbai ji?" Maharani Jaivanta Bai, clad in white entered the hall as people bowed before her. " After your son's coronation?" " I did nothing Badima I swear!" A low voice came from Jagmal. " Maha

Failed Attempts

The ladies were all sited around the bride in the evening planning about the big day the next day as the bride sat unmindfully. "Bindni must be thinking of Kunwarsa " someone giggled. "Or the wedding " another added. Jaivanta Bai looked at an absent-minded Ajabde. She took her hand and led her out of the hall to her chambers. "What happened?" She asked closing the door behind her. "Ji?" She asked surprised. "Why are you tensed?" "Ranima woh...." A knock made her stop as he appeared at the door with Patta. "Ranima you called..." his eyes stopped on her worried face then back at his mother. "Yes, I think Baijilal needs some talking here." She left with a smile closing the door behind her. "Patta." They spoke in unison as the boy looked wide-eyed. "Do not tell anyone who we suspect, is that clear?" Ajabde spoke up. "I know Jija she has a stronghold..." &

Hope

Days seem to pass so quickly in Bijolia, I have been here two days and it feels like I came home just now. Ajabde was sitting in front of the mirror, combing her long hair lost in her thoughts. She was making a braid when her hands stopped. Two days ago she was sitting on the chair in front of her dressing table as he stepped into the room. He stared at how she made the braids in utter confusion before adding " I can not ever master skills like this. It's a puzzle." She smiled inwardly before replying " I think managing war formations is more difficult." He had stopped to see if that was a taunt or a compliment in utter confusion. Ajabde smiled. Sometimes he was so childish and... " Ahem!" Ratan made the sound as she saw her Jija smiling and blushing lost in her thoughts. She looked at Ratan smirking through the mirror reflection and straightened her face. " What?" She asked her sister. " Tell me." Ratan sat down on the floor at her

Chapter One: Masquerades

“Reginald Dyer is yet to apologise for the incident which was criticised worldwide. Punjab is on high alert.” The transistor in the living room broke with the morning news. “On other news the League of Nations…” Meera wiped the already clean surface of the showcase for the second time while listening to it. One of the servants came around and switched the channel to a station where a Raga played. Meera tip-toed up to the transistor and looked around before lowering the volume. She was standing outside the door of the Magistrate’s home office, clad in a saree borrowed from Nimai’s mother, who worked at her Pishima’s house. “I need it for my maid back where I work.” Meera lied with a straight face. Nimai’s mother did not care; she was getting Didimoni’s beautiful blue Jamdani instead of her tattered clothes; she would not think twice about this unharming exchange. Meera tried to listen. The gardener sang outside, tending to the flowerbeds as his scissors snipped the bushes back to shape

Shadows

Kunwar Pratap had indeed found his shadow in her, or so everyone said. Their love, understanding and respect for each other were the talks of the Ranimahal Baithaks. Kunwar Pratap was now the Senapati of Mewar again and all his political decisions reflected her calm opinions and firmly believed. Udai Singh had honoured Patta and Ajabde in secret for their bravery, much to Ajabde's relief. Ajabde's growing influence forced Dheerbai to stay low until her favourable time came. Kunwar Pratap would always talk about his missions with her. Ajabde would always wait months praying for his safety and awaiting his return. He always asked her for advice on political matters. Ajabde found peace In her books and Kanha Ji and Ranima’s bhajans while he stayed busy. Ranima forced Ajabde to teach the princesses some sword skills. Sometimes Kunwar Pratap enjoyed watching her in secret not knowing she was fully aware of his glares. When Chittorgarh received the good news of an heir, Ajabde
