Strangers

This one is a collaboration OS by me and Garima and has no other parts, it is a creation of our midnight chats and random thoughts! Hope you enjoy and review it!

The London Heathrow Airport was buzzing with commuters one hectic Wednesday morning, as the lounge looked overly crowded. In a pair of leather pants, heavy boots, and a white lace top, teamed with her leather jacket, sunglasses, handbag and a trolley in toe, she looked around the place with a frown. Taking off her glares, her almond-shaped kohl-clad eyes were searching across the lounge for a comfortable seat.

Two back-to-back flight announcements came to her rescue as she smiled at many commuters, running towards the gates, leaving the place comfortably empty. She sat in one of the chairs, overlooking the glass panes where the planes were in sight. She placed her handbag carefully beside her on the empty seat and swept her locks away from her face. With a sigh, she took out “ Pride and Prejudice”  opened the bookmarked page of the book and began reading. She had arrived well before the time for the flight.

A man in his late forties frowned at her bag and then at her. “My lady.” He adjusted his specs making her look up “Could you please …”
“Actually I…” She began as she heard a voice behind the man “Ajabdeh Punwar??”
“Ven?” She frowned surprised. “Ven!” She smiled as the man dodged the one asking, to hug her smiling “What a surprise!”
“I will take this seat thank you!” Ven promptly gave her bag back and took the seat making the other man frown some more and leave to find another seat.
“So?” Ven asked with a smile “What brings you here?”
“Work, actually.” She smiled. “Am leaving.”
“This is really so unfair Ajab, You knew I live here, and now you are leaving. Where to?”
“Amsterdam.” She smiled. “There is a flight in two hours.” She shrugged.

“Shit.” Ven looked unmindful at his phone “God knows when this is dead.” He searched his bag for a power bank and put the plugin, and smiled “My flight is in three hours, so enough time to relive some old memories with the old friend.” Ajabdeh checked her watch, no check-ins before the next hour, that was quite a lot of time to be bored.
She shrugged happy, “Sure.”

“So how is work?” He started bringing them a coffee each from Starbucks.
“Work is… interesting, I am happy with how the NGOs have shaped up, We have all worked hard for it!” She smiled.
“Yes, if you ask me, they should make you a partner, the kind of work you put in as an employee…”
“No Ven, they offered but I… I like to work at the grass root level, AC offices are not for me.” She shrugged and stopped at an announcement that prompted the person they sat opposite to, pick up her luggage and leave, In a few seconds the seat was occupied by a man, in a long coat and aviator, who kept down his bag and removed his glares.

“Holy Shit! Pratap!!” Ven’s shout almost made half the lounge stare as he hugged his friend. A clueless Ajabdeh however remained seated. “I guess today is my lucky day to meet Kunwar Pratap Singh after ages!” Ven received a hug and a smile back with a soft “How are you?”
“I am fine… I… what brought you here? Why didn’t you meet me?” Ven frowned.
“Batata hoon, batata hoon, sit down.” His friend let out a chuckle.

“Ohh am sorry.” Ven apologized “I should introduce you two.” Made the strangers stare at each other “Ajabdeh this is Kunwar Pratap Singh, Prince of Surajgarh, and my college friend. Pratap this is Ajabdeh Punwar, my schoolmate, she works for an NGO at Udaipur.”
“ Maharana Foundations. Hello.” She extended her hand as he took it with a firm shake and a smile “Hi.”
“This is so great! “ Ven smiled again “I am so happy to see you guys.”

“So how is your business?” Pratap’s question made Ven give a satisfying smile “Pretty good actually.”
“Getting married soon?” Ajabdeh’s question made him look serious.
“I actually had a breakup! In fact, that is why I am going to New York, hoping to convince her back ”
“Ohh, all the best.” Ajabdeh frowned and smiled “I Am sure things will be fine!”
“Thank you.” Ven turned to Pratap.

“What about you?” They both gave a glance at Ajabdeh who got back to the pages of her book again.
“What about me?” Pratap frowned at him.
“Getting married any time soon?” Pratap chuckled at his question. “Who knows Ven, one day you might just know am married.”
“So koi hai Nazar mein ya I can help you?” Ven asked eagerly.
“ Well, hai koi.” He smiled “But I won’t tell till it's official. You know how news channels there are…”
“Yes yes! Kunwar Pratap the local celebrity.” Ven folded his hands “Of course, but how is she?” Ven smiled “Yeh toh koi secret nahi haina?”
“She is like a fresh breath of air! Someone who shows me a side of me, even I didn’t know existed.”

“Woah!” Ajabdeh stared wide-eyed impressed as Ven laughed “Quiet a poet you are Mr Singh!”
“He is the most generous guy I ever met too!” Ven smiled “In fact!” He thought a little “Why don’t you give him your number and he can help your foundation too.”
“If he wants to…” Ajabdeh stared at Pratap and back at Ven.
“Of course Miss…”
“Punwar.” She searched her purse for a card “Here, are the details.”
“Donate generously! You are my recommendation, Pratap!” Ven smiled eagerly as Pratap nodded.
“So Miss… Punwar, tell me what your NGO does.” His question made her keep her book aside. Ven looked eager. “ Well, Mr Singh, we help orphans and the needy mostly. We also have an old age home, and we currently plan to set up a help centre for Indians here.”
“That is why you are here?” Ven asked as she smiled.

“She is a hard-working independent girl!” Ven added to his friend.
“I prefer to use my life for something useful to society Ven, I think we all should.”
“Yes absolutely.” Pratap agreed.
“So Ajabdeh, how is your life?” Ven smiled.
“Pretty good.” She shrugged sweeping her hair backwards to tie it with a clutch, “I have no complaints.”

The part of her forehead and hairline caught Ven’s attention as he frowned “You are married?”
“What?” She stared at him for a second to realize he had noticed the vermilion. She laughed “Hawk eyes huh? Yes, I am married!”
“But to…whom…?” Ven raised his eyebrows but his question was cut short by the announcement of Ajabdeh’s flight.
“There, My flight!” She got up taking her things.
Hugging Ven she smiled “It was nice to see you!” and walked away with her luggage towards the check-ins.
Ven sat down staring at Pratap who looked at his watch and got up as well at the next flight announcement “I am leaving for Spain, will catch up with you once am back.” He hugged his friend “You go get your girl.”
“Best of luck with yours!” Ven smiled.
“Ahh! I need it!” He shrugged and left with a smile after a firm handshake.

Ven sat down staring at the empty seats then sighed. He had lied to his friends. The truth was that he had a bad financial year and she had left him to get married to someone else. He was travelling to New York to be with his parents and do away with the lost hope. On life and love. Somewhere, in his friend’s successful career, he was jealous. He shook off the thoughts.

“Love doesn’t exist, if it did, I would have seen a true love by now! People see money and statuses, not souls.” He spoke aloud in his thoughts. He took out his phone from the bag; it now showed 50%charging. He unplugged it and switched it on. There were notifications, from his parents, pages, social network, and everything, but one notification caught his eye. His school friend Bhagwati had texted him a link with Do you remember Ajabdeh?

He was about to reply I met her…. Then stopped to click on the sent link, it was a video, of some Hindi news channel. He put his earphones on.
“ Rajkumar Ko Pasand Ayi Commoner”
“Dono bhaage Udai Singh ke na bolne per”
“Suna ja raha hai ke last dono Dubai mein dikhe.”
“ Kunwar Pratap ne kiya bhagke shaadi”
"Kunwar Pratap walked out on his family for a girl"

“Exclusively on Entertainment Masala, We bring you pictures of the bride.”
Ven inhaled as the screen popped up with the photo of Ajabdeh Punwar.
“NGO work se hua pyaar. Kunwar Pratap ne kia sadharan ladki se shadi”
Ven removed his earplugs and without a thought picked up his bag and rushed towards the gates. He looked around there was no one in sight.
He ran to the desk “Please tell me was there any Mr Pratap Singh on the flight to Spain?”
“Sir, you are?” The man asked surprised.
“I… am a friend… it’s urgent.”
“We are sorry. We cannot give you any information.”

He stopped looking around rather frantically. He was about to reply to Bhagwati “I saw them at the…” he stopped. Using the backspace he smiled a silly smile.
“It exists.” He said aloud at the clueless man at the desk.
“Pardon sir?” He asked raising his eyebrows.
“Love.” Ven shook his head and searched Google for more news.

Somewhere on a flight some hours later,
She stared out of the window unmindful looking at the clouds that made paintings in the sky. The Sun was playing hide and seek with them. She got back her senses when she felt his hand tighten on hers. They now wore matching platinum bands, he had ordered with their names on them.

“Pratap?” She sounded worried “ Where are we going?”
“How does it matter?” he smiled at her eyes.
His brown eyes had that twinkle of love that always made her heart beat faster.
“I…” she cleared her throat. “ We should go back and apologize to the families and…”
“Hush!” His hand was on her mouth as she stared at him and stopped. “ let’s not talk about what we will do when we go back” She nodded her head and forced a smile.

He smiled “Poor Ven, I felt sorry lying to him.”
“But we couldn’t risk it, right?” Ajabdeh sighed.
“Yes, we couldn’t. He will understand.” His hand tightened on hers.
“Now you! Stop worrying Mrs Ajabdeh Pratap Singh.”
“That’s Kunwaraniji to you!” She narrowed her eyes at his lingering smile.
“Ji Kunwarani Ji.” He kissed her hand. “Happy honeymoon!”

“But… Kaha jaa rahe hum?” She frowned.
“The world is a large place Ajabdeh!” He shrugged amused at her face.
“But there is none like home, Pratap!” She looked lost again.
“Every place in the world is home, as long as we are together, and you are with me.” He kissed her forehead as she smiled.

The flight was their flight, towards an unknown destination, an uncertain future, a journey of a lifetime but a happy one, together!

Towards You

The Afghans, after Sher Shah Suri's untimely demise, were at loggerheads for power. Their troops near Mewar were now led by Mehmood Shah. They secretly captured territories in the forests and waited to attack Mewari camps when the time was right. Rawat Chundawat and his spies had confirmed the news, and Udai Singh sent a warning to Mehmood Shah to withdraw his troops from Mewar in vain. Now that it was out in the open, it was time they declared war. Mehmood Shah had limited resources in Mewar. His internal rebellion against his commander did not help his cause. His spies clearly suggested that in no way could he win, especially with Kunwar Pratap leading his troops. He was having second thoughts about the war. It was then that one of his aides suggested a perfect plan. Maharani Jaivanta Bai had decided to go to the Mahakaleshwar Temple near the outskirts of Chittorgarh, in the forestlands of Bhilwara. They had travelled a long way and across the Gambhiri river that meandered during...

Purnota: Chapter Three

“Did you ask for me, Dadu?” Bondita asked as the old man smiled at her. She looked fresh, with her hair neatly braided and a cotton pleated skirt, Thamma sewn with a faded top of one of her cousins, as she stood before the old man sitting on the porch. “Yes indeed, Didibhai, you didn’t come for chess yesterday.” The man smiled. “Oh, Pradhan Jyatha wanted me to look out for the …” She stopped as she saw Aniruddha walking towards them down the corridor. She eyed him as the old man followed her gaze. “Oh Aniruddha Babu, come here. This is Bondita Das.” Aniruddha smiled at the child as she looked away. “She is the only girl in the village who has appeared for her final examinations this year. She is very intelligent and…” Aniruddha nodded “She helped me a lot yesterday.” He made her look up, with a cold stare at him as he smiled politely. “Yes, I have called her here to show you around the village. He wants to see the affected areas of the Adivasis, Bondita.” The old man made her nod. “But...

She Left...

The war was over and so were the hopes of regaining Chittor. The Battle at Haldighati had robbed the Rana of all his wealth, and brave men, and bruised him for life. Trying to match up to Akbar or rather Raja Man Singh's army with one-third its strength had cost his bravery dearly. He had lost his friend and companion. He had brushed past death. The only good thing that this war ensured was that Akbar accepted that he cannot have Mewar. His army retreated and left the country in peace after almost two decades and seventeen wars. This war gave something else too. Kunwar Shakti came to help his brother in his time of need. He lived up to his brother's expectations of being loyal to his family. A heavy-hearted Rana Pratap Singh was overseeing the construction work on his lost friend's memorial right where he died, trying to save his master. The Bronze statue of the life-like Chetak stood tall but was no match for the void Chetak has left behind. He was lost in his thoughts as ...

You Deserve More

Ajabdeh woke up with the song of birds as she felt something warm on her hand. Her eyes went wide. Her hand was on the pillow in between them, between his hands, clasped as he slept. She thought of removing it slowly, but he was holding on to it so tightly. Ajabdeh's heart beat faster and faster. What do I do now? How do I not wake him? What if... why is my hand in his? She was utterly confused.   " Am I...In love?" Pratap was staring at the sleeping figure on the bed as he stared back at the rain. Then he frowned as he noticed that she shivered. He closed the windows of the room to make it cosy, then sat on his side of the bed. A lamp flickered on her side like always, and he stared at her sleeping figure as he put his blanket over her as well. She shifted a little in her sleep to make herself cosy again. Her payals and bangles made a rhythmic sound, breaking the silence of the room. Her hand was out of her blanket and on the pillow in between. He tried to slowly put it ...

Purnota: Chapter Four

The group of youth provided by the Pradhan proved efficient for Aniruddha’s liking as they helped him survey the villages, create a set of data and provide a rough idea of how much fund was needed to rebuild the roofs and fallen walls. “What if we make them permanent? That way, the next cyclone will cause less damage. Pakka houses may also get other facilities like toilets and…” Aniruddha suggested as his eyes shone in the flickering light of the dimly lit kerosene lamp in the living room of Pradhan’s house. Drops of perspiration had formed on his forehead in the load-shedding, and the mosquitoes buzzed around them. For the first two nights, Aniruddha could barely sleep in the unfamiliar surroundings with buzzing insects, sounds of the unknown, and eerie animals here and there at a distance. Stories of snakes climbing up to the second floor through windows despite the mosquito net protecting his four-poster bed kept him alarmed. By the third day, after a day’s survey through the villag...

Purnota: Chapter Six

Kalindi waited outside the hut, on the torn mat they usually slept on, using the hand fan to drive away mosquitoes as she stared at the empty path leading out of the house, the path Bondita had taken some time back. It was almost an hour. Did the foolish girl escape or land in trouble? To her relief, she could hear her nephew snoring away indoors, reassuring her that they were at least not caught by the villagers till now. She was sure Bondita would return empty-handed and hurt, and that she would have no other way than to accept the proposal from the Pradhan. That morning, her Kaka would accompany Sarkar Moshai to the adjacent village to talk to a family friend of the Sarkars. They were looking for a bride for their sixteen-year-old eldest son, who worked as a labourer in Sealdah. Kalindi had tears in her eyes. Not much had changed in these years; not much of women’s fate was different, wasn't it? Kalindi was about ten years old when her father took her to the Roy Chowdhury house ...

A Heart at War

Legend has it that Pratap had to struggle for his father Rana Udai Singh's approval on his wedding with the daughter of Bijoliya's chieftain's daughter, Ajbante Kanwar Punwar. It is so because he was the crown prince and his first queen was supposed to be the next queen of Mewar. Hence his father expected his first bride to be a powerful princess who would aid his political needs. But stubborn as he always was, Kunwar Pratap had other plans. The water of the Bhimlat was still. The sound of the waterfall could be heard in the silent afternoon in the dense forest. A pebble caused ripples in the water and alerted the horse gazing nearby. He looked up at the source of the stone. Then began grazing peacefully once again. The source of the stone however was far from being peaceful. His face wore a frown as he stared around restlessly for the umpteenth time. He sat unmindful on the large rock on the bank of the water body watching the ripples closely, lost in thoughts. The soun...

Purnota: Chapter Five

Aniruddha finished reading the book he had carried with him in the dim light of the bulb in his room and decided to pack it away. He was leaving in a few days and wanted to make sure he left nothing behind. The construction work on the school had started, and the Panchayat wanted to give him a thankful farewell he humbly refused. The spotlight should be on Trilochon to help with his next election campaign. Aniruddha did not want to associate himself with the party or the job. He contemplated going back home and telling his father that he had decided to pursue a career in India instead of his initial plan of going back to London. He had been giving it a thought for quite some time, and the day he said it out loud to Bondita, he knew in his subconscious mind he had already decided on it. The more he saw the village, the more sure he was that he was needed by his countrymen. Dadu put faith in him that he could be part of something bigger than himself and his career, and he intended to kee...

Life and You

" Maharanisa! Maharanisa!" The maid-in-waiting ran through the quiet Rani Mahal as Jaivanta Bai, who was sitting in front of the Lord in her room ever since she was back, rushed out of her room, followed by Sajjabai and Veerbai. " What happened?" She asked, her voice calm, but her heart thumping. " Kunwarsa is here... with Kunwarani... She... She...." The maid sobbed as Jaivanta Bai rushed to the room. She stood at the door as her eyes could not believe what she saw. Kunwar Pratap was soaked in her blood as he laid her down on the bed, shouting, " Quick. Rajvaidya..." His eyes stopped at the door as Jaivanta Bai rushed to be beside the unconscious Ajabdeh. The Daasis and Sevaks were running about soon enough. Sajja Bai gasped at the scene. So much blood. Kunwar Pratap had not noticed anything except her calm, unconscious face. Now that he noticed his blood-soaked hands, red, he stared at them as though in a trance. "Kunwar Pratap! Tell me w...

Unsaid

"Keep the Lehenga in this one, that jewellery in the box." Jaivanta Bai was ordering the ladies in the Ranimahal around. Kunwar Shakti entered with an equally stunned Kunwar Pratap at the scene as the hall turned into a mini market thanks to their mothers. " Kunwar Pratap is here." Dheerbai smiled at the duo as she walked up to them. " Choti ma, what are all these?" He asked, surprised. " Shagun!" Sajjabai answered excitedly."For Kuwaranisa. She will be blessed with these for the Sagaai. " Sajja Bai smiled at Jaivanta Bai, who nodded. "What Sagaai ?" Kunwar Pratap frowned at his mother. "Your engagement , aree , no one told him?" Sajja giggled a little, amused. " The four of us are choosing separate gifts of our own choice for your bride, Kunwarsa, come and see." Veer Bai urged him.   "The Sagaai is in three days, followed by the wedding on the Seventh, Rajpurohitji had said," Dheerbai informed ...
