Marriage: Alliance and Love

She sat quietly on the palace balcony, her baby sound asleep on the Jhula. Unlike traditional Princesses, she was born a commoner and hence did not let her firstborn be taken care of by Dai Ma. After all, she was the future Maharani and had to make sure the heir to the throne was safe. After all, she was one of the few to know how manipulative her stepmother-in-law was. The Bhatiyani Queen hated her husband. Suddenly she heard footsteps and grew alarmed.
"Baiji Sa..." She was relieved to see her Daasi
" Yes, what is it?"
" Maharani Sa send you a message to be ready, Kunwar sa and Rana ji will be arriving back in Chittor any time soon, and it's been twenty-one days so Maharani Sa wants you to welcome Kunwarsa yourself."
As the Daasi left, She picked up her newborn, kissed his forehead and whispered, " Kunwar Sa will see you for the first time." Her eyes twinkled with joy. He had written to her continuously these last few months when he could not be with her because he had to oversee the construction of the new capital. She was used to this. After all, their first priority had always been their motherland. This was the tradition of their forefathers.

Two maids arrived to dress her up in the best of her attires, her gaudy jewellery and a traditional red lehenga. She always liked it simple and so did he but she was not that common anymore. The Aarti thal was ready. She picked it up and made her way towards the gates of the Rani Mahal as the sound of hooves and cheer grew closer. Chittor seemed to come alive at the break of dawn.

He rode in with his father who was duly welcomed and taken inside the Palace by his queens. She saw him coming toward her with a smile on his face. His eyes met hers and made her blush. Even after two years, nothing had changed. She did the Aarti and put a Tilak on his forehead. The Praja gathered outside and cheered his name.
" Padharo Kunwar Sa." She welcomed him. A turn in the corridor and they were all alone.
" Ajab De... " He held her hand. " I can't tell you how eager I was to come back this time."
" Kunwar Pratap I can't wait to tell you what I felt when I held him in my arms."
" You won't take me to meet my son?"
"Yes..." He let go of her hand and let her step forward.
" No Kunwar Pratap. You have to bathe, get fresh and then meet the newborn with a shagun with your Rajiraj as per the traditions." Maharani Jaivanta Bai interfered. Kunwar Pratap took her blessings and left for his chambers.
At the traditional ceremony, Kunwar Pratap came to see the newborn prince with his father. The little bundle of joy slept peacefully on the golden cradle meant for him. The traditional name-giving ceremony was held by Kunwar Pratap's friend and Rajpurohit Chakrapani Mishra. Kunwar Pratap and his Ajab De Punwar held their baby boy and named him Amar Singh.

" Kunwar Pratap there are many proposals coming for you from all over Rajputana." Rani Jaiwanta Bai was proud of her son. " There are Ranas congratulating you on the birth of crown prince Kunwar Amar and also asking for your hand in marriage." She continued to the taken aback Pratap with Ajab De by his side.
" You know what I feel about marriage alliances Rani Ma, I can't do this." It was a stern answer.
" But Kunwar sa, you are a future Rana and these are important to grow our army against Mughals. Your Rajiraj wants the same too."

At this, the young impatient nineteen-year-old Pratap ran away from the corridor and inside Ajab De's chambers. That room had been his place of decisions over the past two years. Ajab De knew her responsibilities now. " Don't worry Rani ma, I will talk to him. Who is the princess?"
" Solankhini Bai, from the land of Pratap's Majhli Ma sa." Ajab De made her way to her chambers with a smiling face.

" Kunwar Pratap..." As she entered the room he put his hand on her lips. " Not another word from you Ajab De, I know you are going to repeat what Rani Ma said."
" Solankhini Bai is a real Princess Kunwar sa like you deserve" she continued, ignoring his glances. He watched her go around the room arranging things as she spoke, clearly ignoring his stares.
" You promised me that you will do what is best for our land, and the Solanki clan has huge armies."
" Ajab De." His stern voice stopped her from picking up the Granth that lay beside her bed. She turned back and looked at him.
" Marriage doesn't mean Alliances Ajab De, we are not the Turkish Invaders who marry to put princesses in their harem. Marriages grow with love, respect and understanding. "
" Yes, I am sure she is beautiful enough for you to fall in love." Ajab De bit her tongue knowing what she had done.
Angered he held her hand. " Ajab De!"
" Shama Kijiye..." She stammered, seeking his forgiveness. Her face melted his heart. He made her sit beside him. " I can never love another like you Ajab De, no matter how big a princess she might be, you are my Princess." He could see her eyes hurt yet happy. " Neither can they understand me like you, they will know the Prince in me, you know the person."
" Kunwar Sa, I am not going anywhere, Amar is there with us too, but you cannot alone win the wars with Mughals without aid. You need this, for me, us, our subjects and Amar. We need to make him the best and it can not be done if we lose Mewar to the Mughals. Then Amar will live never knowing us." The thought of Jauhar and Saka shook their minds. They sat in silence lost in thoughts, hand in hand.

The next day at court, he stepped in front of his father as his mother and wife witnessed the events from the Jharohars, " I am ready for the marriage but I have a condition."
" What is it, Kunwar Pratap?" Rana Udai Singh asked.
" I want it to be made clear to the princess and her family that she will only be a queen and not have the rights of suggesting and guiding me like Ajab De. She will never expect to be my Maharani as even though she is a princess, Ajab De is my first wife. " Pratap's intentions were clear, he was doing this for his motherland and family. Udai Singh smiled at his son's love for his wife. The seventeen-year-old Ajab De stood disbelieving at his condition. The queens of Udai Singh were amused and pulled her leg with how lucky she was. Deep down she knew she was indeed lucky to have him.

After the court was over, Pratap made his way through the Rani Mahal looking for her. Rani Veer bai informed him she was at Meera Ma's Temple. With a smile, he rode Chetak to the temple and found her singing bhajans. He quietly ordered the crowd of maids and guards to disperse. She stopped her song and looked at him, from behind her dupatta. He took Prasad and smiled at her. " Happy now?"
" Yes, dhanyavaad." She smiled. He burst into laughter. She got confused.
" You may be the first wife in the world Ajab De who wants her husband to remarry when he does not." His smile faded as he looked at her. " Why? Isn't it difficult?" He was concerned.
" Yes, but I know I am your Mitra more than a wife, Nobody else can be that. Besides, you only taught me to think of my people and motherland before us right?" He always had no word for her intelligent answers. " Let's walk home today." She nodded with a smile.
Together they made their way to the palace side by side, not a word exchanged in public yet their silence spoke to each other, he of his love and she of her faith in his love. A long journey lay ahead, the teenagers unaware of what the future had in store. Ten more marriages, wars, the siege of Chittor, moving to Udaipur, hiding in the forests, all that history witnessed in their life.

Maharana Pratap Singh and Maharani Ajab De Punwar's love stood the test of time for almost thirty years of their marriage, and two sons later, before her untimely death. He married her sister as per her last wish and all through their life they kept aside their personal happiness and pleasure for their motherland.

Chapter Five: Saved

The next time Swadhin opened the door with starched rice and mashed potato in a bowl he found the previous day’s food across the floor, ants feasting on it. The balm however had been used. His eyes fell on the darker corner of the room and Abhaya was half sitting, her knees crouched to her chest and eyes closed. For a moment Swadhin was scared. Was she breathing? He put the steaming bowl of rice down and approached her carefully. He was about to put his finger near her nose to check when his eyes involuntarily travelled to her chest moving slightly up and down. Swadhin could breathe again. It was then that Abhaya came out of her trance to see him leaning close to her. She screamed. Her voice was muffled as Swadhin in a reflex put his hand over her lips. “Don’t.” He said, alarmed. “You will be slapped again.” Her eyes were wide at his plea. She struggled to get his hand off her mouth as he said again, more firmly. “I am letting go of the hand, but you won’t scream. I brought you food. Y

Disguise

I am not going to lose so easily. I still have my last hope left. Baijilal, I am coming,  Dheerbai smiled to herself as the Palki continued its journey. She had done everything, cried, fallen at Ranaji’s feet and sought forgiveness from Jaivanta Bai to make them believe her. She had won over Ranaji again, enough to accompany them on the journey. Kunwar Pratap smiled at the letter that arrived for him at Telhati. He read it thrice before telling Chakrapani “Ranima wants me to meet them at… Bijolia!” “Laxmi. Eat now, what is wrong with you?” Ajabde was in a bad mood as she scolded Laxmi who refused to eat. “Laxmi. Actually, people don’t know how to talk with love.” The voice behind her made her jump. "Please eat Laxmi.” He walked past her to Laxmi patting her towards the bucket gently. “You…You…” She looked scared. “I…I…” He smiled. “Here?” She frowned. “Here.” He nodded. “Why?” She dreaded the answer. “Because “ He stepped forward as she stepped back. “

Failed Attempts

The ladies were all sited around the bride in the evening planning about the big day the next day as the bride sat unmindfully. "Bindni must be thinking of Kunwarsa " someone giggled. "Or the wedding " another added. Jaivanta Bai looked at an absent-minded Ajabde. She took her hand and led her out of the hall to her chambers. "What happened?" She asked closing the door behind her. "Ji?" She asked surprised. "Why are you tensed?" "Ranima woh...." A knock made her stop as he appeared at the door with Patta. "Ranima you called..." his eyes stopped on her worried face then back at his mother. "Yes, I think Baijilal needs some talking here." She left with a smile closing the door behind her. "Patta." They spoke in unison as the boy looked wide-eyed. "Do not tell anyone who we suspect, is that clear?" Ajabde spoke up. "I know Jija she has a stronghold..." &

In Love??

Ajabde was bedridden over the next few weeks. She was too weak to sit up or do things on her own and the medicine men insisted she needed complete rest to heal. Kunwar Pratap insisted on staying by her side which Ajabde firmly refused. She didn't want to be a distraction from his work. That would break her vow, she said. Kunwar Pratap just smiled knowing she was so adamant and how smartly she convinced people. Ajabde was never bored though! The Queens and Princesses constantly came to check on her and keep her company. All except Dheerbai who only came once, when Ranaji visited her. Ajabde was getting better each day as the Vaid came to check on her and suggested it was time she could start leading a normal life again. Her wound still hurt a little and sometimes she felt dizzy due to the weakness but the Vaid said that too would go in two or three days. Ajabde was a fighter. Jaivanta Bai was proud when the Vaid said that Kunwaranisa had the strongest willpower he had ever seen.   K

Shadows

Kunwar Pratap had indeed found his shadow in her, or so everyone said. Their love, understanding and respect for each other were the talks of the Ranimahal Baithaks. Kunwar Pratap was now the Senapati of Mewar again and all his political decisions reflected her calm opinions and firmly believed. Udai Singh had honoured Patta and Ajabde in secret for their bravery, much to Ajabde's relief. Ajabde's growing influence forced Dheerbai to stay low until her favourable time came. Kunwar Pratap would always talk about his missions with her. Ajabde would always wait months praying for his safety and awaiting his return. He always asked her for advice on political matters. Ajabde found peace In her books and Kanha Ji and Ranima’s bhajans while he stayed busy. Ranima forced Ajabde to teach the princesses some sword skills. Sometimes Kunwar Pratap enjoyed watching her in secret not knowing she was fully aware of his glares. When Chittorgarh received the good news of an heir, Ajabde

Chapter Four: Imprisoned

Abhaya was thrown into a room without windows and the doors were chained shut. It was dark and damp and the walls smelled of gathered dust. She could sense the chains being locked as she heard voices outside. She tried to get up but her bruised knees and weak body failed her. She stumbled on the cold stone floor to notice the mattress on one side and a pot of water on the other. What were they going to do to her? Was she the only one here? Where were her parents? In the Summer heat also she felt a shiver in her body. She briefly remembered her house up in flames, the bottles of kerosene being thrown at the open windows. Torches around the house, chanting slogans. The screams of the women. The last time she saw her elder brothers was when they picked up the pistols and canes from around the house. She realised her father was not home when she ran down the corridor towards the chaos, her heart on her throat. The loud sound of the car burning and the screams of her mother made her freeze.

My Everything

Kunwar Pratap stormed into the Mahal at Gogunda. Happy faces of the chieftains and soldiers welcomed him as Rao Ramrakh and Rawatji stopped the ongoing Raj tilak. A visibly scared Kunwar Jagmal looked clueless at a visibly angry Kunwar Pratap. Rani Dheerbai Bhattiyani hadn't expected this son of Mewar to show up that too twenty-one days after his father's death. He was not informed as per Dheerbai's instructions. She looked at Rawat Ji. He must have gone to Raoji at Bijolia. No one except them knew where Kunwar Pratap was staying. It was for the safety of his family. " What are you doing Chotima?" A disappointed voice came. She could stoop down so low? " We were about to inform you..." She spoke up in her defence. " When Dheerbai ji?" Maharani Jaivanta Bai, clad in white entered the hall as people bowed before her. " After your son's coronation?" " I did nothing Badima I swear!" A low voice came from Jagmal. " Maha

Struggles and Tests

Kunwar Pratap ran to hug his mother. Jaivanta Bai smiled pleased looking at him. Sajja Bai had accompanied her here with the Bhattiyani queen and had reached out to her sister in Marwar for shelter with the princesses until the war ended. She refused to stay like a commoner at Samant’s house. “Majhli Maasa.” Kunwar Pratap touched her feet and got a hug in return. “ Where is Chotima?” “She went to Mehrangarh.” Jaivanta Bai replied. Dressed simply in a blue lehenga and silver jewellery she still looked elegant. The sound of Payal made everyone turn as Hansa smiled at her daughter. “This is Ajabde. My eldest.” Ajabde stepped forward to touch the queen’s feet while Kunwar Pratap stepped back carefully watching the scene with a smile. Jaivanta Bai cupped her face and noticed her son’s reaction in silence. “Ajabde show them the guest rooms.” After the refreshments, Hansa Bai instructed her while Kunwar Pratap left in a hurry followed by Balwant who now kind of worshipped him.

Protectors

Rao Surtan was at the Palace gates as the soldiers tried in vain to attack with arrows. His army was stronger and more competent than the one Balwant headed at the Bijolia Fort Gates. “Break the door” he ordered. “Where is Ajabde?” Hansa looked around the cellar. “Jija!” Ratan exclaimed. “She was on the roof last I saw.” “Ajabde.” Hansa Bai opened the cellar door and stepped out followed by Ratan who was equally worried. “Stay back!” Sajja Bai called in vain as Jaivanta Bai too walked out and up the stairs to the corridors of the Ranimahal in search of Ajabde.  Meanwhile, Surtan’s army had entered the palace and he made his way to the Ranimahal. He was having different thoughts now. Killing Jaivanta Bai won't yield him anything… Maybe capturing a few young maidens… Ratan froze in the corridor seeing the man approach. Behind her were her mother and Jaivanta Bai with the same reaction. “ Jee Bavro ho gayo!” Surtan Singh took out his sword. Ratan took two ste

Home

Ajabde looked around the unfamiliar surroundings nervously. The last two days have passed like a dream. The Marriage, the Vidaai and the arrival at Chittorgarh. She was now sitting in the room she called her own, yet seemed so unfamiliar. She got up to see whether anyone was there keeping an eye on her. A little relieved, she took the lota from the centre table and placed it on the bedside table.  As soon as she placed it three daasis appeared at the door asking “You need something Kunwaranisa?” Eyes wide and nervous she replied “N…No… I was just…” “Maharanisa has told us to be at your service for every need.” “I… don’t… need….” She was scared at the thought that three daasis will be at their toes for her needs. “Disperse now.” Sajja Bai’s voice made her feel relieved. “I will get Kunwaranisa dressed for Kunwarsa’s arrival.” She smiled at a nervous happy bride. Kunwar Pratap’s eyes were not easy to be outsmarted. He caught Rawatji in the corridor running out of Rana
