Weekend At the Hills

The Resort was a beautiful one right beside a lovely Lake, with some greenery, lush green lawns, gardens and private cottages. Pratap had booked two adjoining riverside cottages for them. One for Bhago and Ajabdeh and another for Chaks and himself. Ajabdeh followed the Room Boy to her room and lay down on the soft white bed on the left. She had chosen the one beside the window overlooking the men's cottage.
" Woah this is perfect! So soft. Am sleepy."
" Get up." Bhago had already opened her bags. " We need to go to the temple you know, Ajab. Then you can come back and rest. Chaks and I will spend some alone time looking around the place a little. Tomorrow we can go shopping and... " She went about, first changing into a sky blue salwar then dressing up all pretty while Ajab laid her eyes closed, nodding her head. " Hmmm."
" Get up now!"
"Ugh!" She got up and started unpacking when Bhago left.

In about ten minutes, Ajab had bathed and changed into a beautiful light yellow salwar. The leggings and the top up to the abdomen were actually white and a light yellow semi-transparent silk wrapped around them, like a Kurti dropping to the knee. The front was cut open from where the top ended to make her belly button visible. She wore her Kajal and lip gloss and her eyes fell on the matching yellow bangles.
" If I wear these, Princy will tease…" She was talking to herself. " But Ajab, why
Do you care!" She wore them all on her left hand. Then she carefully pulled the dupatta over them so that they wouldn't be evidently visible. A knock at the door made her turn.
" Come in."
Pratap entered as his eyes fell on the revealed belly button and then her long wet flowing hair.
" Bhago is calling, not ready yet?" " Just a minute, I will tie my hair!"
" Umm... Why is your... umm. dress so revealing?"
" What?" She looked at the belly button and then back at him. " Yeh, Fashion hai?"
" Ha toh?"
" It's like a torn cloth!"

"Ohh no! Princy, you are back in Surajgarh Chaap from UK Chaap again."
He shrugged and was about to leave as she turned around to comb her hair. A sound made him stop and turn. Bangles. On her hand, as it moved to comb her hair. He smiled and left as she was lost in her hair.
After the pooja, he was tying his shoelaces at the stairs of the temple when he heard her laughter. Turning around, he saw her distributing chocolates among the beggar children. He walked up behind her.
" Bhaiya yaha dekhne ko kya kya hai?" She was asking a local.
" Madam Garden hai, park hai, mandir hai, lake hai, peak hai, kuch dur qila hai aur ek Lovers point hai!"
" Yeh lovers point kya hai?"
" Ajabdeh!" He called from behind, " Chalo." " Wait a minute, Princy, kya hai bhaiya?"
" Kehte hai waha apne pyaar ka naam lo to echo hota hai Madamji, kisi aur ka nahi hota!"
" What crap?!"
" Haan Madam ji." " Kaha hai?"
" Ajabdeh, Chalo." Pratap called again. " 5 minutes dur."
" Ok thank you! Ghani Khamma!"
The guy left them clueless as she turned to him. " Chalo Princy!"
" Kaha?"
" Lovers Point!" " What? No!"
" Yes, you shout Foooooooollllll! We will check if it works!" " I don't believe this! Am not going."
" Chalo Naa"

Before he could protest she drags him by the hand towards the point. " Chodo mera haath."
" There is no science to this, how does it work?"
" Sometimes things are unexplained! Chodo mera hath!" " But how? I need to see this."
" Chodo!" He kept telling to Ajab who kept babbling. " Kaise? How's it even possible…"
They reached the hill point, overlooking the foggy hills, small seats, occupied by

lovers, it embarrassed Pratap as she was still holding his hand. " Leave my hand..."
" First shout your name then "
" Ajabdeh!" The sound echoed through the valley as he shouted at her angrily.
" Leave me alone! Kabse am telling k haat Choro!" He looked at her angrily but her face lit up, eyes sparkled.
" My name echoed! See I told you it's science! Try yours now, then Fool! Ohh, let me try mine! Ya, you try again, Ajabdeh Bolo. Bolo. Bolo!"
" Ufff Happy now that it doesn't work? Now let's go back!" Pratap didn’t wait for her to leave as he started walking out.
" No, let's go see a garden, Princy." She sulked. “Please”

Pratap was sitting on a bench checking his emails as Ajabdeh sprang around clicking random photos and selfies, with flowers, trees, and running after squirrels. Bhago had called to inform them that they will be meeting up for lunch there, then they
will rest a little and go to dinner at the Resort restaurant itself. Bhago was such a planner, that no one bothered to plan anything but followed her instead. The couple came, looking excited.
" Baojiraj guess what!" " What?"
" The lover's point here really works!"
" Kyaa??" Pratap's voice was a little louder than usual making Ajabdeh turn and stare, then she came forward, smiling at Bhago.
" Yes." Bhago continued where Chaks left off!
" I shouted Chaks name and it echoed but when I shouted mine it didn't." " What Crap! It doesn't work! Princy took. "
" I'm hungry!" Pratap cut in, "Let's go back."
" Hungry? Yes Yes me too!" Ajab forgot all about what she was saying much to Pratap's relief.
As they sat for lunch, he just couldn't discard what his friends told him. He absent-mindedly stared at his food lost in thoughts. If it really works, why didn't it work for me? A strange voice in his head said it did. He shook off his thoughts as he looked at Ajab playing with her food like a kid.
"Princy!" Her call made him turn as he was about to enter his cottage. " Yes, won't you stop calling me that?"
" Kunwarsa! Humare specimens pagal ho gaye hai!" " Humare? You mean Tumhare?"
" Lovers Point wali believe I think we should tell them that you."

" No!" A strong voice came as she looked up at him, confused. " No?"
" I mean, they are happy, let them be ..."
" You are right... okay, see you at dinner Princy!"

At the restaurant, Pratap was busy reading the Menu when Chaks said, " Aa gaye!"
He looked up to find not theirs, but all eyes at the door as Ajabdeh Punwar decided to arrive in a black top teamed with a red mini skirt. His eyebrows raised to fall again as she came up smiling, all eyes following her legs. As she sat down beside him, he stared around and then at how clueless she was about the attention. He took the napkin from the table and placed it on her bare legs like he meant it for her lap.
" What the..."
" Why did you wear this?"
" What's wrong with you, Princy?"
" What's wrong with me? Or with you? This is not Delhi, people stare!"
" I Know! I have the legs to flaunt!" Her face lit up with a smile. " Am so pretty, Ohh My Gosh!"
" Oh my Gosh!" He replied in her tone, taunting her, nodding his head thinking What the hell, she thinks they stare as she looks pretty?
She took the fat menu in hand and went through it twice, clueless.
" Menu hai ya dictionary! I haven't read so many things even when I studied!" " Just tell me what you feel like having, and I will order."
" Kebabs. Ohh and roti and Chicken Tikka Masala, achar too. Maybe ice cream!"
" Sab akele khaogi?" He stared surprised. " No I can share, but do princes share?"
He nodded his head and ordered, deciding to share whatever she was having. After dinner, Pratap ordered a beer and sat outside his cottage in a deck chair. The cold night had made him wear his leather jacket over the black t-shirt he was wearing. He was going to have a quiet sip when the miniskirt legs appeared blocking his view of the moonlit lake.
" That guy is in there with her, Romancing! And I am sleepy!" That was more like a tone in which a child complained.
" So?" He asked plainly. " That stupid guy!"
" Stop calling him if you want anything to drink?"
" No, I just want my bed!" She sat down on the chair beside him. " Can I use your room until he "

" No!"
" Why not?"
" Ajab! You sleep like a dead log, no one is going to carry you back!" " Uff! I was drunk asleep that night!"
" No, I said."
" Fine, order me a Coffee Mocha with chocolate chips on top, hot!" He dialled the order and took another sip at his beer.
" Ohho!I am feeling cold!" She shivered.
" Huh! Show some more skins... ohh am so pretty!" He laughed.
She stared at him, narrowing her eyes. He walked inside and came back with a blanket. She smiled gleefully as he threw it at her face!
He sipped at his drink as the silence of the place filled him with peace. The same silence was killing her. She started humming a song...
" Raat Banjar si hai... kaale khanjar si hai.... bol mein kya karu... aise halat mein... ang laga de re..." She stopped realising she was singing something inappropriate. He realised her thought and smiled secretly.
" Hmmm... Ummm.., Seedhe saadhe sara sauda sidha sidha hona ji... maine tujhko..." She stopped as he stared at her.
" You cannot sit quietly?"
" No!"
The coffee came and she took a sip in a hurry, spilling the coffee and burning her hand.
" Ouch!!"
" Why are you in such a hurry? Is it hurting?" Worry swept across his face as he brought ice from the mini-fridge. She looked at his worried face as he held her hand with one hand and applied the ice with the other.
" Umm... am fine really." She took her hand away. " Happens to me every day!" Her chirpy tone was back as she walked up towards the lake, leaving the blanket. He followed her, as her hair blew in the breeze across his face.
What's wrong with me? Her hand burnt, why did I overreact?
" Cold Cold Cold!" her voice startled him as she shivered. " Here I have my jacket."
" No."
" Have it."
" Oooo Princy! Chivalry!"
" Stop taunting at everything."
" Why are you so serious?" He couldn't tell why his mind was disturbed.

Quack! Quack! Quack! He was startled to see her run after some white swans who were running and shouting in fear.
" Ajab! Leave them alone! You will wake the other guests."
Chaks interrupted Ajab's happy chase as he said, " Ajab I need your help!" His face was serious and Pratap and Ajabdeh looked at each other and then at him.
" My help?"
" Yes."
" Did you get her pregnant or something?" Her suspicious serious question startled the boys.
" Hell no!" Chaks was loud with his protest. " We don't... I can't decide on a wedding gift!"
" Do I look Like some wedding planner?" " No."
" Shaadi ho gayi meri?" " Nahi."
" Do I have a boyfriend?" " I don't know."
" Then why the hell are you asking me?"
" Really Chaks, why are you asking her? I can even suggest something better!"
" Waise Bhi..." Ajabdeh looked at the shining water and continued, "Gift waise honi chahiye jo dil se dil ko connect karein, kuch aisa jisse dekh ke kuch din, kuch pal, kuch memories yaad aye and makes you smile." The guys look at each other stunned. " Wow." Chaks spoke up as Pratap continued his disbelieving stare at her," Tumko kabhi mila aisa gift?"
She looked at Pratap and remembered, Churiyaan, she didn't know why. She looked away quickly as eyes met and she said " Kabhi Nahi." The words were spoken strongly like she wanted to believe them but couldn't. She looked utterly confused as Chaks murmured " Kya du main..."
" What about that necklace you keep talking about??" Pratap spoke up. " What necklace?" Ajabdeh asked.
" Bhago said she wanted the necklace she saw at the mall the other day but it was not matching the wedding jewellery so "
" Go buy her that!" Ajabdeh smiled. Chaks was about to leave when he turned around to say, " One thing Ajab! Ummm can I stay ten more minutes with Bhago?" " Jao Jao! Apna ki kamra samjho!" Her taunt made Pratap laugh as Chaks turned red and left.
Ajabdeh sat down on the dew-wet grass. Pratap sat quietly beside her. " Suppose... you leave for Delhi. What will you miss?"

" Everything!" None of them stared at each other. " Then why do you wanna go?"
" You know jab main jaa rahi thi what did Ranima say?" " Kya?"
" Go and come back to make Surajgarh a better place. So that future mein koi Ajab apne ghar chor ke na jaaye."
" That's so Ranima!" He smiled. She nodded.
" Yeh Dekho." He opened an email on his phone and showed her. " Kya hai?"
" Govt approval. Jald Hi Surajgarh will have its own college. The high schools are running pretty well, we are building a hospital, and with this college..." He stopped as he noticed her staring at him wide-eyed and smiling.
" Saach??"
" Yes. "
" Why didn't you tell me?" " Tum bolne do tabh na!"
" Toh iska matlab... iska matlab..."
" Iska matlab no Ajab will ever leave home again." His words seemed like a dream. " I'm so happy, Princy!" She hugged a taken-aback Pratap who slightly leaned at her weight. Her head was on his chest, she could hear his heart beating fast. His mouth dried up as he placed his hand on her shoulders, she kept smiling, eyes closed.
" Ajab!" He found a voice as she realised what she had done.
" I'm so sorry I was just so... happy. I'm so sorry!" She got up and walked away before he could react.

Chaks was coming their way when a disturbed Ajabdeh walked past him like he was invisible. Pratap was sitting on his bed, numb, his heart still beating fast, as Chaks looked at him like he had eaten a dead lizard!
" What happened?"
" Nothing. Goodnight!"
" Ajabdeh!" Bhago called in vain as she pulled the blanket!
Stupid Girl! What would that Surajgarh chaap Princy think of Ajab? But I was so happy.

Why did her name echo? Why was I bothered seeing people eye her? And when her coffee fell...uff what's wrong with you Pratap Singh.. tomorrow I am gonna be fine. I just need some sleep.

This is so embarrassing, Ajab! Tomorrow I will be back to my old friendship with him ... oh god, he's not my friend! He's just Ranima's son by accident! Ajabdeh, stop thinking, it was just a hug and you are overreacting, maybe the UK chaap in him thought nothing right?

It was just a hug, a friendly good news hug, my heart was beating fast coz it was cold. yes. Yes. It was so cold.

Of Faith and Fate

Series Announcement! Historical Fictions are special, so here is one, short but special tale close to my heart after a really long time! This story is a special one because it is completely historical fiction with very little connection to the fan fiction I have written previously. However, I have maintained the sequence of events, reading history books on the context.  This is not a story of a man and a woman, their love and trust. This one is about the tests time often puts people through, forcing them to change. My protagonists in this one are hence, two princesses of the same age. Ajabdeh Punwar or Ajbante Kanwar Baisa, as she is locally called is the princess of a very significant district of Bijolia in Mewar. Bijolia lies in the seat of political events, at the border of Bundi and Mewar. Having her lineage from the mighty Chauhans, her forefathers once ruled Mewar. Her father is an officer in the army of Mewar under Rana Udai Singh and she is a lady of princip...

Preparation

It has been a tradition since time immemorial in the face of the earth that the men marched to war, seeking glory for their states and kings, adorning their bodies with bruises no less gaudy than the most precious gems of the land, while the women waited and prayed for their safe return. No war was easy or certain. At least that is what they grew up learning. But does it stop the war? Or the need for power? Absolutely not. The royal blood demands shedding it. Kumar Viraj could have left Maanwari as a child but Maanwari had not left his veins. That was perhaps why he was braver and more skilful than men his age. When Adhiraja Ishaan Dev offered him Neelambargarh’s mighty troops to capture Maanwari, he knew they would surely outnumber his uncle’s one by hundreds. But he made sure he refused Adhiraja's personal help. Battles made Ishaan Dev’s adrenaline rush. He wanted to lead Kumar Viraj to victory. But when Kumar Viraj said that it would only demean his claim to be ready for the thr...

Eternally Yours

Ajabde woke up to find neither the pillow nor the husband beside her. That was really unusual. Has she overslept? No, it was dark and the first birds were singing. She sat up to find that he had neatly arranged the pillows and made his side of the bed and put his blanket over her. She checked the changing room. No, he was not there, but unlike other days his clothes were not in a mess. She freshened up and reached the dressing table. His brooch was not there. Where is he? Has the war... Her heart skipped a beat. What if he had left and not even woken her up? " Daasi? Daasi?" She called as one of them walked in. " Ji Kuwaranisa?" " Where is Kunwarsa?" " He left early in the morning for Dangal and then a visit to the village. Do you need anything?" " No, You may go now." She put on the sindoor in a worry. Maybe something urgent has come up. She walked to the Puja room and was shocked. Her garlands were made, the Chandan was in place and ...

The New Capital

“Some dreams are once broken often come back as haunting nightmares.” The Padishah Begum received the news of the birth of a baby boy to Harka Bai at Sikri. She had arranged for a feast and celebration at Lahore and thanked the Almighty herself for this happiness. She prayed that the boy was safe. Hamida Banu had herself sent a messenger to the Padishah Begum at Lahore. The ladies celebrated for a week. The Padishah Begum had given away coins, and clothes to the needy and new clothes to the kin. The Emperor was on his way to Sikri as well. She had smiled at the happy faces savouring the wine and sweet dishes. She greeted and congratulated everyone around the Harem. The Timurid blood would be safe on the throne.   Jalal had visited once in the past few months, giving her the good news of Harka Bai conceiving again. He feared that people were conspiring at Agra. Hence, Harka Bai’s firstborns died, unnaturally. Ridiculous rumours were spread, about the Emperor killing his o...

What If...

Ajabdeh, played all night with the newfound puppy who was already keeping her on her toes. First, he jumps into the trolley bags and inspected her clothes, alarming Heer and making her laugh. He had fallen in love with a pink lingerie Ajabdeh tied to his head like a bow, laughing harder as he tried to open it, going in rounds. Heer saw her carefree laughter with a smile. She may not like the guy, but he did make her sister laugh. Heer shook her head. Something in her felt really awkward as she cleared her throat to ask "Jija??" "Hmm?" "Do you... umm... like Kunwar Pratap?" Heer looked scared to ask. "What?" She frowned and then smiled as the puppy licked her face. "Of course I like him! He is a friend." "Jija I meant..." "Good night Heeriye." She hugged her sister then picked the pup up and snuggled in her blanket as Heer stood watching. "Let's name you baby?" She heard Ajabdeh talk. "Umm...

Understandings

After counting days, Ajabde was happy that she was going to Bijolia. She knew how eager her mother and Ratan would be to know about her new life. She couldn't wait to hug her mother and feel like... Home. She was selecting gifts for her parents and her siblings as per Ranima's instructions. Then suddenly an idea struck her mind. Her new family welcomed her with so much love and support. Especially Ranima and Majhli Maa Sa. She wanted to give them something. Suddenly she remembered that Ranima had loved her embroidery work on dupattas back in Bijolia so she called a Dasi and ordered some plain Chunris and embroidery threads. She had a lot of work to finish in a day before leaving.   Kunwar Pratap came back into the room to see her on the floor, right in the middle of the room with red, green, yellow, and pink all sorts of dupattas scattered. " What's all this?" He asked not sure if he should be asking. " I am making gifts. For Ranima, Majhli ma, Rani Dheer Bai...

Neelambargarh

The fort of Neelambargarh was named so because it stood on a cliff above the low-lying plains surrounding it as if it was ready to touch the sky. The fort was surrounded by hilly forestland on three sides and extensive plain lands used for agriculture on another. The road winding up to Neelambargarh was guarded by three gateways and a secret tunnel, known only to the Neelambargarh royal family, led down from the five-storey palace to the river in the forestland. The kingdom of Neelambargarh was known across the land beyond the Heemdevi Mountains for its art and architecture. True indeed, like the myths it held, the stone walls of the fort and the castles shone in the sun like fire swayed by the wind. The gateways had extensive architecture and tales of Neelambargarh’s rich past and kings, engraved in stones, alongside nymphs and the several forms of their chief deity, The Wind, and his tales of miracles. Above the gate in local scriptures was poetry written in honour of the past ...

Sadh Puron

Rasmo ka mela yaha pe khel rahe hai saare Aaja shamil ho isme zara thoda muskura de Seven months into her pregnancy, Bondita realised, almost to her amusement, that there were certain prejudices that even Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury gave in to. Ever since Koeli arrived, to help her out, as instructed by Kakababu, to her utter surprise Aniruddha gave in to Koeli putting a kajal tika behind her ear every time she stepped out, to avoid bad omens. He even willingly gave up the bedroom at one phone call from Trilochan insisting that the woman needs her space during her pregnancy. He ended up having a makeshift mattress as a bed, in the middle of the living room in the apartment, and he was more than willing to sleep there while Koeli stayed with Bondita. Although she liked to have the entire bed to herself, she sometimes missed their pillow talks. Aniruddha also made sure the household never ran out of supplies of pickles and sweets. Koeli didn’t lose a turn to tease Bondita about how th...

Patralekha

Mujhse ye rishta jo, aa usse hai sawaare Chal sayane se thoda nadan bann ja tu Ashapurna walked out of the room with questioning eyes as Somnath shook his head. He had called Aniruddha as soon as Bondita complained of pain and uneasiness. He was already off to court and his house owner had reassured him that the news would reach him soon. He was supposed to come with the allopathic doctor. “I think it is time.” Ashapurna almost whispered to Somnath as Koeli rushed in with wet towels to comfort Bondita who appeared in a lot of pain. “Talk to Jetha Shoshur Moshai, please.” Somnath nodded and rushed downstairs where Batuk paced the room as Trilochan and Binoy sat on the couch. Ashapurna’s mother had taken Ashutosh with her for the day as soon as she heard.  “What do we do now?” Somnath broke the silence. “She was not due so soon.” Batuk frowned as his uncle gave him a disapproving stare making him stop. “Som, go and call Dai.” He insisted as Somnath remained frozen in his place. “We c...

Trouble In Paradise

Kyun na jaane teri chinta ho rahi hai mujhe Har ghadi ab kyun hai dhyan tera. "Eyes on the road." Aniruddha scolded almost in a reflex, putting his right hand vigilantly over the steering wheel. Bondita's painted hands were on the wheel but her eyes kept wandering to the cattle on either side of the road. "You can't be distracted while driving. You will kill someone." He said in a rather monotonous voice. His hand didn't leave the steering wheel nor did his eyes leave the road. But he made sure instinctively that his hands stayed furthest away from her touch. Bondita breathed in as the morning breeze hit her face. She had removed the saree from over her head when they had stopped by the road to exchange places.  "If you push the car into a tree again, it's your last lesson." He had warned while she giggled.  Bondita couldn't tell Aniruddha why she was distracted the last time. It was almost dusk and while he instructed her on the wheel,...
